Richard Feynmann explains quantum electrodynamics for the layman

Discuss.

Charming. Richard Feynman is a phenomenal populariser for the sciences and specifically physics, but that little clip really doesn't shed much light on anything. What that clip does illusatrate is his engaging style which is what made him an excellent and entertaining educator of some of the most mind-bending fields of modern science.

QED! WOOT! The most successful theory ever in the history of science.

I love QED! If you found this video interesting then I highly recommend you read this great book on this subject: QED: The strange theory of light and matter. (written by Richard Feynman himself.) Don't worry, Feynman is very good at taking complex ideas and distilling their essence down into easy to understand language. Sure it takes a little thought to soak it all in, but that's the fun part! :)

Here is a freaky little tidbit from QED to peak your interest:

The three basic actions:

Action #1: A photon goes from place to place.

Action #2: An electron goes from place to place.

Action #3: An electron emits or absorbs a photon.

These three actions are the basis of all the phenomena of the physical world except the gravitational effect and radioactive phenomena, which involve nuclei shifting in their energy levels.

Everything else in the physical world is based on these three simple actions.

PBS has a great program on String & M theory.
