I guess I fail to see why the guy would keep the signs up if Bush is not president anymore and cannot be impeached anymore.

The signs are not a political statement. They are deliberately created eyesores created for financial gain.

The financial gain occurs in one of two ways.

The first way is when the neighbor buys the parcel holding the annoying texture at 5 to 10 or even more times the normal market price the land would command in the absence of the signs.

Land prices in the area of the signs, not necessarily just those immediately adjacent to the sign, will be generally lower than they would in the absence of the signs and thus the sign-maker can purchase land in their vicinity at lower than they would in the sign's absence.

Alternate accounts or confederates can be used to obtain the land In the event the owners of nearby land do not want to sell to the sign-maker.

The signs use the political message to reduce the probability that Linden staff will forbid their display.

For purposes of being annoying, the signs could use a picture of someone vomiting blood or aborted fetuses or something of that sort, but the abuse staff would probably act on abuse reports about that on the grounds that they are generally offensive or are clearly attempts to harass or impair other's enjoyment of Second Life.

My suspicion is that the Linden staff want to stay out of this conflict in order to stay out of all future such conflicts. There is probably hope in the Linden company that they will at some point get big money real world advertising contracts and they don't want to do anything to suggest that an ad campaign in-world could be shut down because of community pressure.

The signs would continue to function so long as their content keeps the Linden staff from finding some clause in the TOS or CS to invoke to justify their removal.

When Bush is no longer president, the fact that the signs contained an obsolete message might be enough to make the pretense that they are sincere political messages impossible to sustain, but this would not be a reason for the sign-maker to remove the signs but rather to find some other message that would continue to disguise their real purpose. The obvious simple choice would just be to change the name to that of the current president.

If you read the initial post you will that this is a joke thread. The joke was inspired by the numerous posts and threads that claimed various methods of dealing with this situation, ranging from not caring, waiting, educating the public not to buy the signs, etc.

The bold italicize section of this post contains one version of a solution to the "ugly sign, griefing build, the neighbors just don't have the same vision for the area that I do" problem, being having the ability to control what you see built into the program's code.

There are numerous other recent threads describing the problem from different perspectives at great length and proposing many different solutions. A perfectly good solution, from the point of view of someone who wants to enjoy the land they are paying for, was proposed nearly three years ago and no action was taken to implement it. It is reasonable to conclude that this was deliberate, given the numerous complaints made through the forum and I suspect made to the Linden company that we would never see. If you can hide the big money advertiser's advertisements that would make them worth a lot less. The more the Linden company gets involved in making detailed assessments of user made content requiring the skills and knowledge of a legal judge the more employees they need in their abuse staff and those employees would need some sort of legal education to be able to make decisions that have any ring of validity to them. You can rest assured the Linden company does not want to be paying lawyers salaries to the people on their abuse staff.

The solution might end up being to remove the Linden staff from the decision completely and let the users who buy sims deal with it. This doesn't solve the problem of conflicts over usage of resources in a shared world pseudo-environment like Second Life but it gets the problem out of the Linden's hair, which is all you can really expect them to be concerned with.

Purely speculation, but my opinion is he would find another annoying but more topical sign. But maybe not. I hope he just adds a few words...."You shoulda Impeached Bush!"

We could have a contest to pick the community's choice of most effective wording for a griefing sign disguised as political speech.

If we have to have the things around to drive us crazy we should at least get to choose our poison, right?
