Few things in life are filled with such anxiety, terror and uncertainty as coming out. You never truly know how your family/friends/coworkers will react until the day arrives. Reactions from those you tell will vary and probably surprise you.

In the end, being honest and true to yourself is worth it.

For any of our fellow SLers who are planning to come out or know someone who is:

Congratulations!

If there was a national day for being straight, would it be "National Going In Day?"

Crap... I hope I didn't give anyone any ideas.

I don't see why not. Actually, you could 'come out' as straight. ;)

I will unfortunatly never *fully* come out in RL. All of my husband's and my close friends know that I am bi though. They have always been very accepting of me. My mom pretty much knows and she is fine with it. But I don't think I would ever come out to my husband's family or any of my dads. I think that is easier for me to compromise with though, since I am bi and not fully lesbian.

Though if my husband ever dies, I would probably continue my search for a woman. So I guess the full truth would come out then.

Major support and good thoughts go out from me to all who come out on this day!! May it make any weight on your shoulders lift and your spirits rise. You are beautiful and do not let anyone ever tell you otherwise! :)

So I am the token straiaght male under 60 in palm springs. I know a lot of people who have come out by virtue of that fact. :)

Straight or Gay the most important thing one can ever do for themselves is be true to who they are. Self knowledge is the key to enlightnement. It is also just easier to live your life being honest about who you are.

It also takes a shitload of courage to lay yourself naked about something like sexuality. When you do not know how it will be recieved, and what problems it will present in terms of friends and family. I applaud and honor anyone who has the courage to take this step.

But really to anyone who is going to come out, and to the people who are waivering about it. Life, in the long run, will be far better being honest with yourself, then living a lie to keep others happy. Ultimately you are the person that you owe the most to, and you are your only judge. Life is always better when you are proud of who you are.

I'd say take a deep breath, and go for it.

If I came out in real life of who I really am, there'd be torches coming.

I'll come out if I ever really truly understand what's in there. How do you ever out yourself if your sense of self and sexuality won't ever hold still?

Seconded. Sometimes, it is a bit more complex than just the binaries.

That said, to anyone who strongly identifies with what 'coming out' implies, my hope for you is love and understanding--I hope the world will continue to love you for being you.

(Neehai, now I have Diana Ross embedded in my skull. :D Ouch. Denkyouberrymush.)

What a great idea! My motto: find a need and fill it. Unfortunately, there's a damn good reason I don't work for Hallmark as a designer I am not.

I know I have a reputation for sarcasm here, please understand that this is most affirmatively *not* sarcasm. It may be a shite job, but that is only a reflection of my ineptitude and not my sentiments. Added: If you happen to think that you can derive anything at all about my sex, gender, genotype, sexual preference or lack thereof from this post, you are wildly mistaken. If you then think that you should use your imagination as a grounds for spewing hatred, you are truly your own reward.

Fine then let me add to the thread and come out myself.. I am a heterosexual. I have denied it for a long time only sexing my wife 3-5 times a week pretending to not be the fiendish perv that I am.

So there it is honey, for you and all the world to see, I will hide no more!!!

I am heterosexual!!!

From now on its 5-6 days a week!!

(Hey cut me some slack.. even God rested on the 7th day.)

I think y'all ought to retire that Diana Ross song and instead update to a revised version of Pink's "I'm Comin' Up".

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'm comin' out, so you better get this party started...

Ok, I'll admit it. I went crazy with the Mystic Tan and got a spiral perm from Super Cuts that went very wrong. There. Now the truth is out and I can be free.

I don't know why, but just reading this (again) makes me feel (vaguely) guilty... * goes to find a confessional or professional... * Thanks for the post! (thoughtful)

Perhaps the most difficult part of coming out isn't the open hostility. That is expected, what is worse in some ways are the snide comments and the attempts to belittle a difficult time.

I agree Zuzu. One other part that is very difficult is the unknown factor with family. We'd like to think that our families will support us no matter what, but I can tell you that I know many gay women and men who were rejected by thier families when they came out. Fortunately, my family was exactly the opposite and everday I'm thankful that my family's love isn't conditional as it is with others.
