So many things to comment on, but I am utterly speechless. Just when you thought you heard it all, someone finds a way to top it... as a marketer, Milgram's study has always fascinated me, but man, this was an extreme use of the authority gimmick http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051009/NEWS01/510090392/1008

From: Chip Midnight Wow, people are unbelievably stupid! thats the unintentionally funny part, but yeah, I have a prob with the guy saying "I had the neked 18 year old blow me cuz the cop told me to" no one is THAT stupid but , what kind of sickness could cause someone to play puppeteer with these people?

I don't know what to say about this. Wrong on so many levels.

From: Chip Midnight Wow, people are unbelievably stupid! I can't believe that they (the people in authority and perhaps to a smaller degree, even the victims) were that stupid - I think it's more plausible that they saw a ray of light through a mouse hole and decided to peek. In other words, they always wanted to see that hot little number they hired naked or perhaps they wanted to secretly "strip" her of her dignity or be stripped themselves (many have dreamed of showing up at work naked, it is a very common dream). The caller only gave them (the managers) "permission" (and a valid excuse) to do what they probably had passing thoughts about doing already but were not able to admit the desire to do so even to themselves. Good critical thinking would have put a halt to it all it immediately. Critical thinking however, is discouraged in corporations as it is in America today overall. The further we continue along the path to abolish critical thinking in our children, the more vulnerable we make them to this sort of authoritarian abuse.

Sans' offbeat theory...

It was the guy's brother, the retired cop who posted his bail, who actually perpetrated the crimes, planted the evidence in his house and/or had the brother buy the calling cards FOR him and then proceeded to make the calls and replant the evidence in his brother's house....
Err, when I was 18 I wasn't stupid enough to give someone head just because a cop might be watching or searching my house. Are 18 yr. olds more naive than 18 years ago, or is it me?
Good for the maintenance guy who refused to submit to authority...
Finally, I hope that McDonalds wins their suit against the manager of that particular store, because really, having an inflated sense of authority as a Manager of McDonalds just cries out for punishment.

From: Gabe Lippmann I don't know what to say about this. Wrong on see many levels. Disgusting. All the perps are getting off scott free and the victims get nothing but more humiliation. It seems like this is key though.. From: courier-journal Most were fast-food restaurants, where the male and female victims were young and inexperienced, and assistant managers were likely to be working without supervision. McDonald's certainly doesn't value intelligence as a desireable employee attribute. The thing that angers me the most though is McDonalds dumping on the dumb employees after they got fooled and the guy who did it thinking *he* was the victim.

I agree 100% with this statement! The article details how people are stripped of free thought and essentially mechenized. This article astounds me on so many levels, and the systematic dehuminization of the populace is one of the causes or maybe a symptom of our current trend of people "just following orders"

In an introductory college psychology class, I saw the Milgram tapes--now that is some scary stuff. Dispite the screams and moans of agony coming from behind a partition, the participants would continue to shock the heck out of an imaginary 'victim.' Some would grimace; others would smile--but, in almost every case, they kept turning that knob even though the last notch in the dial was marked 'lethal.'

A wonderful example of why authority of any kind (pauses momentarily to let the implications sink in) should be met with a healthy and constructive skepticism - by everyone.

When did critical thinking become such a bad thing in the education system? It used to be the foundation of the curriculum, now it seems like a dirty word to a lot of teachers.

I'm pretty sure that if I called someone, anyone (besides Nix of course) and told them that we had a situation here at work, someone was caught stealing so we are keeping them captive in the office and making them strip down to an apron... that convo would go something like this:
Me: Hey, can you come down here and watch this horrible girl who stole from the store? She's naked, we're really showing her.
Other Person: What?
Me: Oh, don't worry, it's a SITUATION. I'm the powerful Manager here. Yeah, she's naked and we are totally degrading her. But I have to get back to the register! Don't you understand that?!?!
Other Person: WTF? Are you a @#$!*%*%()#)$ YOU STUPID $#($*@#)#(*$!!! PIECE OF @#$(*%)(#$%* !!!
Sigh...
