This is my first time trying to use a poll. Bear with me.
If someone says, "Do you want to hook up later?" and the reply is "Possibly *s*" what is meant by the word "possibly?"
Does it mean yes, no, or maybe?

Perhaps it means: "When hell freezes over, possibly, but in case you react badly to replies like that, I can't say it directly." Or similar. Cali

....it all depends, just like 'Yes', to be honest. The only thing that's totally clear in SL or RL is 'NO!'

I chose "maybe", but I have seen "possibly" used ("maybe" as well) by some as a delayed "no".

I think it means "NO (if my wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend/MOM is around), but YES (if I happen to be alone when later comes along.)*smile*"Basically, the "we'll see" answer that can so frustrating.

Possibly means that in the current condition, its a NO. If not, they would use YES instead of possibly.
So if you ask someone if they want to hook up later, getting a possibly means no, UNTIL the condition changes. Maybe you're too ugly, stupid, have no money, etc. Or the person asked is not available yet, but in the process of removing some baggage.
By satisfying some of the insufficient variables, the possibly will become a YES. By which time, you should ask again, and there will be a likelihood of a YES. If the answer is possibly again, then continue to satisfy any identifiable variables and query again. If eventually you get a 'FUCK OFF', then you can take that as a NO and move on.

If I asked my parents for something as a child and the answer was "maybe" or "possibly *s*", I took it as either "no" or "if you do everything I say and do it when I say it, then maybe but don't get your hopes up"
As an adult, the Q & A is completely dependent on context.
In some siutations, it would mean exactly what it sounds like, something that could happen given a certain set of qualifiers.
In many situations, it's a polite way of brushing someone off.
I think if someone is offered sex in such a direct fashion, a "possibly *s*" would really have to be considered a no.
It's possible *s* that the interrogator was fishing for a response and yanked the pole the instant he/she got a nibble.
Did the fish take the bait or just investigate it? I think you'd have to wait and see what the angler pulls into the boat before making that judgement.

I once had a friend point out that when I answered with "maybe" it meant a reluctant yes and if I said "we'll see" it mean no. I had no idea that I was doing it, but she was absolutely right.

Does it mean yes, no, or maybe? What I meant, Katt, was "yes, but right now I'm hooking up with your best friend. We'll hook up after I get her out of the apartment and maybe have some nachos". Sorry for the confusion :/

Possibly means it isn't impossible, which is a definite maybe.

When I say possibly, it means maybe. Usually it just means I have to check on a few things before I can give an answer.
