Do people in frats make a big deal out of the Greek alphabet?

I am watching the movie "The Butterfly Effect", which is nothing at all like what I expected.

I used to work with a guy who had been a frat member, and he knew the Greek alphabet. And could sing all sorts of drinking songs, which he unfortunately would do from time to time at work.

Big deal? Nah. But knowing it, yes. Stupid songs, yes.

What did you think of the movie?

In the frats that I've seen, they test you on the greek alphabet when you enter. The trouble is, they don't actually know it. Trying to help out a younger friend, I started writing it all out, including capital, lowercase, and final forms of the glyphs, as well as the obsolete letters. I even threw in some pronunciation.

The response was that they only needed to know the names of the glyphs, and were only tested by reciting them in less than 30 seconds.

They only really seem to make a big deal if you're a Gamma Delta Iota.

hahahaha

Hiro you slay me!

When I was in college, for Mother's Day one year my mom insisted she needed an oven mitt. It was a tongue in cheek nod to domesticity and an affordable gift. My mom was an alum of the same school, which has a very active Greek community. I went to a store that specialized in frat lettering iron-on stuff, gave the obvious sorority girl (even w/out the lavalier and ring and monograms I'd've suspected) the mitt and asked for Gamma Delta Iota to be ironed on it. She looked at me with an astounded, wide-eyed look of confusion and asked "GDI? What house is that?" The other clerk rolled her eyes with annoyance, "G*d Dammed Independant, it's a joke, you know?" she huffed. The first girl still didn't quite it yet, and the second gave me a long-suffering look, pleading for understanding. I smiled, paid them and took my mitt.

Mom laughed, even harder when I told her the story.

I'm a 2nd generation GDI, proud of it!

Before I heard about Delta Lambda Phi (a gay frat), I used to walk around with a homemade tshirt that spelled out Phi Alpha Gamma.
