Guantanamo, 'Detainees', and Secret CIA camps

There's going to be a lot of hay made out of how the Bush Administration is recognising these 'detainees' under the Geneva Conventions. It's all bullshit.

From Forbes.Com: "The president said the 14 key terrorist leaders, including Mohammed, Binalshibh, and Zubaydah, who have been transferred to the U.S. military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay would be afforded some legal protections consistent with the Geneva Conventions."

Note, "SOME legal protections CONSISTENT with..." blah, blah, blah, real genuine authentic naugahyde, dozens of naugas were killed to bring you this quality product, preserved in real snake oil.

That ONE statement right THERE should be enough to get him IMPEACHED. Never mind VIOLATING the Geneva Conventions! Soverignity of nations! Covert ops!

And his administration is trying to get legislation pushed through that will RETROACTIVELY ABSOLVE anyone who committed a war crime from being prosecuted!

From Forbes.com : "Aides said the legislation being introduced on Bush's behalf later Wednesday on Capitol Hill insists on provisions covering military tribunals that would permit evidence to be withheld from a defendant if necessary to protect classified information.

As part of the package, Bush asked Congress to shield from prosecution or lawsuits federal personnel who handle terrorist suspects.

"Passing this legislation ought to be the top priority," Bush said."

Bush is also trying to get legislation passed that would allow "evidence" that was obtained under duress (torture) to be used against them. I have to hand it to them. They look as though they're coming clean and changing their ways when in reality they're trying to legitamize the whole deal retroactively. Yeah, let's see... kidnap dissidents, torture them until they "confess," put them before a kangaroo court where they're not allowed to hear the evidence against them due to "national security" and then execute them. Welcome to the land of the free.

Its even worse than that. The right to a civilian trial is not allowed for anyone classifed as an enemy combatant and they may be detained without a hearing or speak to a lawyer until hostilities are over.

I wish this bill was just something out of left field (right field?), but its a reflection of what's going on in the US on all levels of government and crosses party lines, although this is a new low. Expect to see this trend to continue for as long as law enforcement is given a higher priority over justice.

I have my hopes but they're tempered by the last election when I thought only the radical fringe could be crazy enough to reelect Bush. No single event has ever tarnished my opinion of my fellow US residents as that last election. I'd like to think there'll be a democratic sweep this time, but who knows. And even if there is, while I'll be highly relieved that the neocon coup has been kneecapped, I'm not a big fan of the dems either. Both sides of the aisle are full of demagogues and crooks.
