Hi- I like to check in on SL while at work, but don't want to get fired. Recently, they send out a warning memo because some people were playing online games. "They" knew this because of massive bandwidth suckage. So. If I change my preferences to keep my bandwidth under 140kbps, d'ya think I'll get caught? Or just too frustrated with laggage?

Depends on how anal your admin is, I guess?

Yes, you will get caught.
There are a number of very simple checks for on-line gamers.
Bandwidth is not the only thing they can see about your usage. An admin can see:
what sites you're connecting to how long you're connected to those sites what you did while you were there (as in, what links you clicked and what pages you looked at) what ports you're connecting through (connections on non-standard ports are a dead giveaway to someone using their computer for something other than simple web browsing)
And if they REALLY want to get anal, there are ways of seeing what programs are running on your computer. They could install spy programs to grab the occasional screencap. They can log your keystrokes.
And ALL of this is legal if you signed one of those agreements saying that you'll use your computer for business purposes, yada yada yada.
In short: follow the rules, or you'll find yourself looking for another job. And don't think they won't tell your next employer about you... While it's illegal to say anything about an empolyee's performance, a simple "Oh.. him" in an annoyed sounding voice is enough to put the HR person at your next job on notice.

thanks for the info. I'm assuming that SL connects via a "non-standard port?"
I do know that I get a lot of latitude because I am a "creative" and need to keep up with technology, and they pretty much don't care about our web browsing habits, unless it's porn...
