No. Its not that kind of thread. Sorry. I have a serious question, and I figured this was just as good a place to ask as any, and I'll prolly get quicker replies I'm looking to stock a new aquarium with half a dozen each of guppies and tetra. I really really don't want to breed fish - I just want to keep them! So with that in mind, would I be better off getting all females, or all males? Males tend to look nicer - but will a shoal of males fight more? Is it ok to get one species all male and one all female? or should all fish be same sex? or doesn't it much matter?! I have done quite a bit of searching, and can't find anything that really answers the gender questions. Lots of info on breeding.... not so much on specifically NOT breeding! So any tropical fish keepers out there, your advice on this will be appreciated!

I do know that males fight a lot. However, when we started our salt water aquarium...I had to actually call a couple of pet stores to get educated. Don't call Petsmart or Petco. They have limited knowledge unless they have a 'real' pet keeper on the premises that is knowledgable about aquatic animals LOL. Look in your phonebook or on yellowpages.com and call an actual aquarium store that specializes in aquatic animals. Even if you are calling in another state, it's totally worth picking up the phone and speaking with someone who knows their stuff. When we got our salt water tank, I listened to the fools at Petsmart and had 3 dead seahorses and a sick Nemo after 4 days. I went to a professional after who helped me prepare the water and environment properly and choose the right fish to inhabit the aquarium based on the size and other factors. Hope that helps.

From: HoseQueen McLean My guppies always eat all their babies yeah, they do. bastards! that's one of the reasons I want to make sure they don't breed - I don't want to see them eaten and I don't have the room or resources to quarantine dozens of lil guppies!

From: MadamG Zagato I went to a professional after who helped me prepare the water and environment properly and choose the right fish to inhabit the aquarium based on the size and other factors. That's the bit I'm doing now. I've got a few weeks of fishless cycling to do before I can even get them, so now I'm trying to figure out what I get when I do! But yes, next on the agenda was a trip to the aquatic center to pump 'em for info
