As of this morning, the Pluto debate is apparently over. It seems we've lost a planet, and gained three "dwarf planets", Pluto, Ceres, and Xena. I have no idea if that means we should say we have 8 planets in our solar system or 11. Was it a loss or a gain? Astronomers, it seems, now top engineers in the "if it ain't broke, break it" school.

Good riddance! I've always been ruffled by the fact that Pluto's orbit is highly elliptical, is out-of-plane, intersects Neptune's orbit, and is 3/2 in phase with Neptune (suggesting that it was captured by Neptune's gravity).

But they're saying it's just a temporary name. Anyway, like I suggested earlier: make Pluto an _honorary_ planet, keep the Solar System at 9, and keep almost everyone happy. |
