Kendra Bancroft has created a lot of amazing steampunk wares, I've heard folks discuss steampunk in the forums, and I just read an article about RL steampunk guns on boingboing. Then it hit me -- I don't know what steampunk is. What is it?

Good ideas of Steampunk that share my "favorite fantasy era" would be....

- Crimson Skies
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
- You might even count League of Extraordinairy Gentlemen in that. ;)

Got it! :)

In addition to Kendra's wares, are there any other Steampunk artisans or sims out there?

All of Caledon is at least marginaly Steampunk, including several stores there. There are others... A quick search in world will turn up a few, as I recall.

The Diamond Age and Hayao Miyazaki get mentioned in that article. Although they might not be "steampunk" canon to a lot of people, I think they do the best at expressing the aesthetic motivations behind it.

Essentially, what if the world had reached higher and higher levels of technology without abandoning the traditional styles of the 19th century in favor of Modernism?

Two of my favorite steampunk books are "The Difference Engine", by Gibson, and "Fitzpatrick's War" by Theodore Judson. Ulrika, you should really read Fitzpatrick's War... I think it will speak to you. :D

I enjoyed Dinotopia quite a bit (the original children's illustrated book, that is, not the TV series, or the video game, or whatever they've done to fuck up the original idea).

Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass is also mildly steampunk.

I dunno if I'd really call Dinotopia /steampunk/. The only thing remotely steamypunky I can recall from it is the submarine the father makes near the end, and that was pretty marginal.

You're probably right if you want to be strict about it ...

There was a lot of stuff concerning their technology in the book anyway, and, it's the correct time period. It's always had a whiff of steampunk to me. :o

How precient! My Burning Life Exhibit is going to be a trip through my own bizarre "Steampunkesque" concept of...

Time Traveling Vikings!

Imagine a world where Vikings shaped the landscape and invented their own technology for raiding cultures through a temporal slipstream!

I do hope everyone will come visit and see whatta true nutjob I really am!

and to think, I thought it was a bunch of people who like me were disgruntled after Valve introduced Steam as the verification tool for Half-Life and its various descendants

I love the aesthetic of steampunk.

I love gears, springs, cogs, coal-burning furnaces.

I have a store in Port Caledon. Steam engines, a machine shop for them, a few vehicles and assorted lab equipment and miscellaneous items. Deckard & Quinn Co. in the find or in my profile.
