Fun nonsense (once you bypass all the "intelligent" discussion).

Watching people be idiots of themselves. Oh, and on that note, see who has the mentality of a 13 year old.

That's all these forums are good for.

Neither intelligent discussion nor fun nonsense is available in the SL forums (with all due respect to Gabe and Kurgan).

It is the push and pull of ideas--some nonsensical, some essential--that drive the rhetoric here. Ever watch thinking evolve? Ever watch a multiplicity of ideas distill? As the world, inside and outside of SL, creates itself, these forums provide an ad hoc arena for discussion.

(Yes, I have managed to write an entire paragraph that says absolutely nothing) :D

They show me the life of the mind.

And sometimes that life is shown in the way that John Goodman's character in Barton Fink threatened to show it, and sometimes it's as thoughtful and inspiring as an E. O. Wilson essay, and sometimes it's just silly and fun.

And who wouldn't enjoy all that?

Oh, and they're also accessible from the dayjob. I mean, c'mon: what more could one ask for?

The forums are for entertainment. In fact they are often more fun than actually logging into SL.

I get a lot of entertainment and smiles here. I also learn a lot, and feel sad when sad things happen. It's a lot of emotions, that's for sure.

What is this "SL" anyway? Is it some kind of add-on or tool bar to help me better enjoy the forums?

I see the forums as a kind of grubby marketplace at one end of SL. Grubby doesn't mean it's not nice, it just means it's not formal and posh. It's that kind of market place where worn stalls heave with goods people are selling for cheap. And if you're a regular at the market you might just know a seller or two, or some of the people who mill around in the busy, bustling crowd.

People come here whenever they have a new product to sell, or whenever they need anything. Everyone is spilling in and out of this or that side street here, so it's a great place to spread the word. And it's inevitable with this many people bustling in the same small area, the odd bit of humorous gossip or chat will pass from ear to ear.

So that's how I see the forums. A kind of relaxed, slightly worn but comfortable market place, where a lot of faces, most I don't know, some I do, come together for tons of different reasons.

I see the forums as that alien bar scene in the first Star Wars movie. Exciting, engaging, and diverse, but one wrong move and you can have every molecule of your body split and splattered like pancake batter dripping and sliding down the grimy walls. :p
