When two opposing viewpoints, a thesis and antithesis, engage each other in argumentation, it is not merely the points of disagreement that are examined, but the STRUCTURE OF THE BELIEFS that FORM those points of disagreement. In order to achieve synthesis, one side must lose. That is, when a synthesis is reached, one side, one argument will be made to feel LESS than the other. That is what happens in argumentation. That is how progress is achieved through argumentation. That is how solutions are found.
If you don't want to have your beliefs questioned and be exposed to the possibility that you might feel your beliefs are WORTH less than another person's then DO NOT engage in argumentation. You might also want to stay away from diverse groups of people whose opinions you might not share in order to avoid being questioned and maintain your mental status quo.

Come on, don't get me in trouble with Chance! Post! I would have tried to respond, but I was much too busy taking everything as a personal attack and feeding off it, then running with tears streaming down my face to the fridge to grab another quart of Haagen-Das, only to return to the forums for more. This post WAS a direct attack on me, right? Chance IS implying that my side of the argument will inevitably lose, right? And his sig looked at me funny when he posted it too, that really got me pissed. Should I open a seperate thread to respond? _____________________

I respectfully disagree Chance. Often here on these very forums two diametrically opposed viewpoints will be discussed, positions outlined, intelligent points made in depth by both sides and in the end we are still left with no "winner".
It is entirely possible for there to be no clear "victor" and for both sides to simply leave with a clearer understanding of the other side of the coin even though their own belief does not change. _____________________

I disagree as well. First because, as Billy said, there usually is no winner.
And secondly, feeling belittled is not a natural consequence of "losing" an argument - which I will interpret here tmeaning, "more people disagree with you than agree with you." It is never necessary to belittle another person in order to make your points. It is gratuitious. It is always possible to treat the opposing side with respect, though we are all human and often slip, from total disgust or whatever. Making it one's signature to treat others with belittlement, or indulging in it on purpose, however, does no good, and probably drives away others who might share your point of view. coco _____________________

Billy, Cocoanut, thanks for the thoughts- but it's not in context anymore. I originally posted this back when a loud voice in another thread was playing the victim card any time someone disagreed with them. It wasn't meant to be taken so broadly; it was meant for that particular person to read it. The only reason this thread got brought back up was because someone linked the insult thread to the tiny man comment.
