if cannabalism is the act of eating other humans, is catabalism the act of cats eating other cats?

who cut other people open like cantaloupes {*SLURP*}

I've had cats all my life up until 2 months ago (poor Mr. Bigglesworth :( ) and I've never had that problem. My momma kitties always managed to keep daddy's away. I would watch when momma kitty leaves the babies for whatever reason. Just keep daddy occupied until momma kitty is there to protect them. :) Conrats Kitty Granny! :D

I have a few cats and I would say a couple of days / week , at least until the mother is back on her feet and is fit enough to protect them. (then keep a close ear out for a fight if daddy doesnt want to be nice)

I would also suggest taking them to the vet, getting them checked and ask their advice as well.

Thanks that clears it up a little bit, and yes I am trying to get her into vet soon to have them just do a basic exam because she is just a year old and this was her first litter but she has been an excellent mama, she will barely leave them to eat, in fact has just nibbled a few seconds in last 24 hours so I'm moving dish close to her today too..she just will not leave her babies. Having never had pregger animals this entire thing has been a fun experience but I dont' think I want a repeat anytime soon LOL
Since she's so watchful I think I will let him roam *under my supervision* today

just keep them seperated, like put the momma and her kittens in the room where you had daddy under lock down.

while i have heard of this happening, i once lived in a home with several cats and none of the males who would get the females pregnant would eat the babies. not once did i see it happen in 6 litters. yes, i know...cat house. my roomate refused to spay and neuter. *sigh*

I think as long as they are under your supervision, things will be ok, if you leave the house, keep them seperated. :)

Have fun with the babies!

If vegetarians eat only vegetables, do we have to watch out for humanitarians?

The Toms eating kittens is kind of a feral/wild cat thing. I doubt you will have problems. The vet is the best peson to ask.
