Quoted from another thread, I'm sure the OP won't mind... From: someone I remember being booted from one site for 'unacceptable language' - it look a long time to track down the offending phrase. It turned out that it was my mention of the writer Michael Moorcock.
Got me thinking ... When I was a teenager ( and I'm not saying when that was ! ), I read Moorcocks End of Time trilogy, and it's always struck me since I first came here that SL is FAR more like Moorcocks world than Snowcrash or the Matrix or Gibson's. Hedonistic people, the search for "romance" in a gamelike world where no-one is what they seem to be, god like beings with ability to change shape and alter their environment at will are just a few examples. I remember the book very dimly but with warm memories, ( Hawkwind, Stonehenge etc !! ) I'm so tempted to go root them out again...

I never really liked Moorcock's scifi books, but I devoured his fantasy novels when I was a kid. The Elric series was the first fantasy stuff I ever read and I was a huge fan. In fact on the wall next to me is a signed and numbered print of Michael Whelan's cover art for Stormbringer

I first found Moorcock through Michael Whelan ~ as an artist who uses acrylics he inspired me in a way no other artist had and the cover of many an Elric book was done by Whelan. The books ended up blowing me away and i've reread them about four times. That's funny that the person gotbanned for mentioning Moorcock, though. Silly moderators... ;P

Yeah, Michael Whelan is amazing. One of my favorite artists by far. I discovered him through Moorcock, hehe.

Anyone ever read Tad Williams "Otherland" quartet? Fun read, if it weren't a million pages each of the 4 volumes.

I like Whelan too, but I loved Rodney Mathew's later interpretations even more. I just did a search and found this great link to Mathews web site ... http://www.rodneymatthews.com/
