This was a letter just forwarded to me.

From: someone

Special Election November 8, 2005

The Marriage Amendment stating that marriage in Texas is between
a man and a woman passed both Houses of the Texas Legislature and will
be on the ballot for a special election on November 8. The amendment,
which will be listed as PROPOSITION 2 on the November 8 ballot, must be
approved by a majority of Texans for this to become a part of the Texas
Constitution, which would remove the issue from the jurisdiction of
activist judges on the courts who have struck down Defense of Marriage
Acts that other states have passed as simple bills and not as
constitutional amendments.

If this were on the ballot during a regular election, there is
no doubt that this would pass by a large majority. This is a special
election, where the statewide vote is expected to be only 750,000 total.
The passion, money and organization on the side of those who oppose
Proposition 2 because they want same-sex marriage to be legal in Texas
could cause this very important amendment to go down in defeat. Because
Texas is the only state where this issue is on the ballot this year,
same-sex marriage proponents across the nation are sending their money
and volunteers to Texas to defeat Proposition 2. In one of their
organizational meetings in San Antonio, the plan was disclosed to have
people from other states come to Texas to register to vote 30 days
before the election to defraud this election. There is no residency
requirement to register to vote in Texas -- you can register the day you
move here.

The other side has money, a website, yard signs, bumper
stickers, paid staff in every major city and has done a major buy for
advertising on TV and radio. We don't have their money or supplies, but
we DO have the truth and what God says about marriage.

The church must weigh in on this election to insure that God's
standard for marriage is the law of the land.

Why does the government need to be involved in regulating loin exclusivity agreements? Why can't we just tax people based on income, dependents, and need?

If people want to sign agreements with each other that state the rules of dividing up belongings if they break up, fine. But WHY do we have to have the state involved in marriage AT ALL? $%&#!!! Why can't the state just find it irrelevant whose loins are promised to whom? The interests that care whether we have 10 wives, 10 husbands, or are wed to same sex clones of ourselves are the same interests that aren't supposed to be writing laws in the first place.

Government recognition of two peoples' union isn't what keeps a family together.

(thanks for the link) ; )

You beat me to the punch, Memory. :D I am a volunteer for No Nonsense in November. Please consider a cash donation. This campaign is not a persuasion campaign. It's aim is to get registered voters who support our cause out to the polls on Nov. 8th.

PS: Here's a link to my original post on the subject.

All this anti-gay B.S. we've seen at the state and federal levels for the past 4 years is the result of two factors:

1. The Bush admin's (and republican party's) pandering to the religious right, because they realize that the religious right can mobilize a serious voting bloc in any election issue.

2. Turd-Blossom's propaganda brilliance. (That's Karl Rove for the confused reader.) This admin has been one of the worst ever in terms of hurting our economy and in terms of imperialistic aggression. Getting the bewildered herd to focus on emotional issues rather than economic or political issues is a great way to distract the bewildered herd from getting really pissed off at the decreasing number of above-poverty-wage jobs and the ginormous amounts of money being stolen from taxpayers to feed the war-machine corporations.

BTW you can bet your ass that as a Texas resident I'll be voting NO for this crap.

Fat lot of good it will do, though. Texas is a regular bastion for uneducated, conservative, superstitious sheep. Only the Republic of Austin has any voters with brains.

Haha, no doubt. Austin and Travis County are a blue island in a sea of red...

It won't hold forever. What we're seeing, IMHO, is the last death-throws and knee-jerk reaction to a vocal minority who reside on the far-right side of the aisle.

As more people are exposed to gay couples and see that marriage between two members of the same sex has zero impact on thier own marriage, more will support the idea. Look at CA for an example - public acceptance of gay marriage is now split down the middle, where just a few years ago those supporting gay marriage were outnumbered by those who oppose it.

It's just a matter of time.

I wouldn't go that far. I know conservatives who are neither uneducated nor superstitious. I think it has more to do with the spaghetti monster than school or political ideology.

If you really want to see a horror show, you should go see pastor Hagee at Cornerstone in San Antonio (which owns an international cable channel). It's worth the drive. Go on Easter. Seriously.
