Before I even fiddled with my graphics drivers the SL Client was running UNBEARABLY slow. UI and buttons in game took a few seconds to click, rotating your avatar to change direction in world was unbearably horrible and slow. Everything is just...........running at snails pace.
No idea why this is. I tried getting new drivers but that was just awful, the new ATI catalysts would crash my client before I even got to the log in screen. I've gone back to omega drivers and I can get to the log in screen now. just...everything is SLOW!
I've tried all the different clients and they're all the same. I can tell without even logging in jjust by mousing over the buttons and typing in the Username and password boxes, and playing around with the preferences. Yes, BEFORE loading the world. I don't know why everything is all slow and awful.
Please no mention of graphics drivers as I've fiddled as much as I want to with em, updated ,degraded, upgraded again.
I think it could be memory?

From: Simon Au AMD +4200 dual core (both affinities are set) About a year ago, SL had problems with dual core machines but it's far better now. I wouldn't play with processor affinity, if I were you. You don't say if this happens in more than one sim. Do you have this problem everywhere you go? Also, you on a wireless network? edit: missed this bit on the first read.. From: Simon Au Yes, BEFORE loading the world. Do you have anti-virus software running? If so, try telling it to not worry about SL or, if you can't do that, turn it off. Also, _before_ you start SL, how much free memory does your machine have?

Also, your not running any other OpenGL programs or GLIntercept by any chance?
It sounds like you are in software render mode...
I have an x500 card and XP in an older machine and it plays SL at a perfectly resonable frame rate.

Yeah I remember it last year, it sorted itself out. Really SL has ran fine since I joined in April 06. Also, your not running any other OpenGL programs or GLIntercept by any chance?NNnno, not as far as i'm aware anyway. It's like something has triggered this to happen though. Perhaps There's something I should disable / turn off. When I do log on ; the menus at the top of the second life window such as File, edit, have BROKEN text. Here's a picture http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/3695/brokenol4.jpgThis has only been since it's been acting funny too. A Vivox gateway error pops up each time I log on too. I tried turning off my anti virus stuff, didn't help at all. And yes i'm on a wireless network.

Well... It may be possible that something you installed like overwrote the OpenGL ICD in your windows folder and so now you acrtually are running in software mode because your video driver doesn;t regognise it ro something. Some years ago I had a game install do this to me, trying to install it's own special OpenGL driver :/
A compelte uninstall and reinstall of the video driver might replace any messed with files.

Which video drivers are you using ?
Do you do a clean install using Driver Cleaner Pro when you update them ?

I use the latest Omega Drivers. I can't install ATI Catalysts because it gives me a zero display service error. I get it while installing Omegas, but it's fine after reboot.
I jus did a reinstall by using Driver cleaner for the first time and still the same result. Slow Slow slow.

How could I see if this is the problem / go about fixing it farallon?

Hahahaha, I fixed it.
I disabled VOICE under preferences, and i'm running nice and smooth again. We're back in business!
Why would voice make it so slow like that?

I have the exact same problem, but unfortunately, voice chat is already disabled in my prefs. Sadly, too many things have changed for me to pinpoint what caused the slow-down. I recently re-formatted/re-installed the OS and upgraded one of my video cards to the 8800gt, which runs every other app (WoW, CoD4, etc.) smoothly. I've tried the latest SL main release, as well as the latest RC release. I tried running it on a monitor that's using the older video card with no luck. I have no anti-virus software and no other OpenGL apps running. I haven't been on SL in a number of months, so it's also possible that it's the latest version of the SL client that's just not jiving with my system, and not even due to something I changed. My symptoms are identical to what Simon describes in his original post. Going through the preferences is a nightmare. Just checking a checkbox takes 20 seconds or so. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. System specs below. Vista Ultimate x64 Intel Pent D 940 dual-core 3.2Ghz 4Gb OCZ DDR2 667 SDRAM Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe mobo EVGA 7900GTX and BFG 8800GT (latest nvidia drivers)
