Muting Objects?

Is it possible to identify an object making a particular sound and mute it? Or if not, to just turn off all sounds coming from any objects (but still hear my UI noises)? My neighbor is adding atmosphere to his build with constantly looping audio. I searched through the forums and found references to muting objects, but I can't see how to do that in SL, or to isolate what object is making a sound. Even if I could just silence everything but the UI, that would be fine.

Yeah, I could ask him to turn it off, but he has a radar dish which always claims to be "targeting" me, so I have a feeling the result would just be me moving :)

Most of the items on my mute list are objects. Scoreboards, talking beers, etc. Go to chat history, press the mute button, it will list all the folks talking including objects. Select those that annoy you, click, done, blessed silence.

Devlin's correct, but only if you're wanting to mute chat text, not audio. There isn't currently a way to do that. The best you can hope for is to ask the builder to consider limiting the range, or making scripts that turn off when the owner isn't online.

The Lindens are working on improving the sound system for 1.4. You should ask them to consider allowing you to selectively mute (and not download) audio as well as chat, assuming they haven't already.

Thanks for the info, both of you. I'll do a more careful search in Feature Suggestions, and add the suggestion if it doesn't exist.

I could be wrong but I think if you mute an object, all other objects with the same name will be muted as well. Keep that in mind.

Oh! Yes, it's name-based, not key-based. ...which can be inconvenient if you've muted "Object" and are now confused as to why the script in your plywood box isn't talking to you.
