I'm trying to run SL on my new laptop, but it won't let me log in and gives me this message:
"Unable to connect to Second Life. Despite our best efforts, something unexpected has gone wrong." At first i thought it was SL that might have been down (and upon looking at the status page, i found out i was right) but i tried logging in on another laptop, and it let me in right away.

My system:
Toshiba Satellite L305
Genuine Intel(R) CPU 585 @ 2.16GHz
Windows Vista Home Basic
2.16 GHz
286 MB of RAM
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Memory?: 1.00GB

This may sound too obvious, but I have to ask. Did you check to see if you could connect to the Internet at all on that laptop? It's not unheard of for people to forget to enable WiFi or something on a new machine, and then wonder why SL doesn't work.

Also, check your firewall settings. Perhaps you can't connect is because you haven't allowed SL to get through.

On a side note, your listed specs have got to be incorrect. There's no way you've got 286MB of RAM, for example. I'm guessing the 8 was a typo for 5? Did you mean to type 256?

Even that would be impossible, though, since you wouldn't be able to run Vista with just that amount. Home Basic requires at least 512MB just to function.

Was 256MB perhaps the amount of video memory you've got? Or rather I should say shared video memory, since you've got an integrated graphics card instead of a real one.

Speaking of integrated graphics, I'm sorry if I'm the bearer of bad news for you on this, but IGP's don't play nice with SL. The only one that is officially supported is the one in the Intel 945 chipset, but just barely. Not all features will work with it, and frame rates will be pretty abysmal, even at minimal settings.

I'm not sure if the IGP in the Mobile Series 4 is supported at all. I'm skeptical because on the SL system requirements page, it doesn't say "Intel 945 or better." It just says "Intel 945", period. Notice next to all the nVidia and ATI stuff, it does say "or better". It's hard to believe they'd simply forget to put that next to the Intel listings.

The graphics engine in the Series 4 is two generations newer than that of the 945, if I'm not mistaken. It might or might not work. Good luck.
