Hi! When starting SL there seems to be hundreds of polygons stretching out from my avatars head, covering the screen in a second. They all differ in color and new ones appears/dissapears each frame. They make it nearly impossible to see anything in the world.
I am using an ATI Radeon x1950Pro graphics card with the latest drivers, windows xp and the graphics are set to Medium.
I have played other, though less graphically demanding, games (battlefield heroes) and it worked fine.
Please help me solve why this is happening.

Welcome to the results of ATI's stubborn refusal to follow OpenGL standards. To prevent the problem, go into Preferences -> Graphics -> Hardware Options, and disable Vertex Buffer Objects. ATI cards don't implement VBO's properly, relative to how SL needs things to be.
Now, why the heck the viewer doesn't automatically disable VBO's the instant ATI hardware is detected is anyone's guess. I've been suggesting they implement that for years now.
As for Battlefield Heroes, I'm 99% sure that's a Direct3D app, not an OpenGL app, which is why it's Windows-only. Assuming that's true, then a different set of rules applies. ATI does make sure their stuff works properly with Direct3D.
Since SL has to work across multiple platforms, Direct3D woudn't be a good option for it.
