This question comes up again and again. I think I've posted it to the forums once before, but just in case:
For technical reasons we have to put a limit on the distance two primitives can be in order to be linked. So what's the limit?
The simple approximate answer is: The maximum distance between the center of masses of the two primitives is the smaller of the two distances below:
(1) 32 meters
(2) three times the largest dimension of the largest primitive (plus 1 meter)
What this means is :
(A) very small objects can be a max of about 1 meter apart
(B) very large objects can be a max of 32 meters apart
(C) a 10x10x10 meter cube can be about 31 meters from a 0.01x0.01x0.01 cube
Trying to link collections of objects such that two peices are more than 32 meters apart will silently fail.

Maybe it shouldn't be silent?

Shhhhhhhh.
Did I say "silent"? I should have said "really really quiet". If you block out all external sounds and turn your volume waaaaaaay up you might hear the soft whispers of a failed link attempt.
Seriously, while it doesn't pop up a "Warning: your link has failed!" widget the color of the selection highlights should provide a visual cue that the link did not happen.
Who wants a denial buzzer sound when the link fails? It's not really my department, but if lots of people pray^H^H^H^Hcomplain loudly in this thread the gods of the user interface may hear you.

I just want a warning that says "Warning: Your link has failed! <Reason Here>". I struggled for about 30 minutes trying to link my house into one bundle, and I couldn't understand why it didnt work. It was really frustrating. A little error would have been good. (What would have been even better is for the darn thing to just link!)

The visual cue was always enough for me...but something else did used to happen that was really inconvenient, I ran into this when building a house a little while back. I linked up the deck on one side of the house...around the side...all was well. But when I got to the back, and tried to link a piece that was apparently out of range of the existing linked set, the entire thing would unlink. Not sure if this still happens though.

The unlink on failure bug has been fixed.

O Lindens we do beseech thee.....provide unto thy loving servants a buzzer sound when linkage fails in thy mercy...that we may know our folly and repent and bring our primitives into the fold of thy commanded minimum distance. amen. oh and please give us toes too. amen.
