The Total Suckage of the Grid

All day today the grid has been horrible. Second Life is not life, it's Second Death.
  1. No friends list and the friends online list webpage is down.
  2. Teleporting is a joke, more likely to cause a complete system crash than a movement from one sim to another.
  3. Two of the skins in my inventory switched names involuntarily--my Nyte skin is calling itself Charmed Earth 30 Skin and my Charmed Skin is calling itself Nyte n' Day Evolution Skin, meaning, I can't get a skin to rez correctly! It says I'm wearing Nyte n' Day skin in my inventory, but in the picture I'm wearing Charmed Earth 30 skin!!!
  4. Half my inventory is showing up as not found when I try to rez it or put it on. Every single animation in my HUDDLES was missing today. GRRR!
  5. When I finally get teleport to work, it takes a half hour for the other residents and the sim to download properly, if at all.
  6. Music streams are not working.
  7. It took me 10 minutes to see my IM to LiveHelp and another 5 before anyone answered to say yes, the asset server is messed up.

What is going on and why isn't anyone posting in the Linden blogs about the total suckage of the grid today?

Caden Rolland couldn't send me an IM, we wound up finding each other in a group chat session someone else already had open, Tampica Citizens. I also could not IM him in our own group. And Friends list doesn't work for either of us.

I can't send group notices to the group Bisexuals in Second Life. This is really bad because it is a large group of 330 plus people and we're trying to stay organized with weekly meetings now and a building project. A great deal of the momentum I hoped to get going in organizing the group is being stalled.

I love Second Life but communication is everything in here and I hope the next update will clear this up.

I completely agree with you, babe. I had a nice long chat with Bub Linden tonight about all the issues that we've been seeing in SL this week, ranging from the security breach to he forums being downsized to the sucky performance, and while I do believe that the Lindens are doing their best to fix things, that doesn't change the fact that I have experienced FIVE total system freezes today while in SL.

Truthfully, if it wasn't for the M2 and the obligations I have to Katt, and the fact that some of my very best friends in the world reside here in SL, I would have been gone for good this weekend.

This is an absolute disaster; worse than the 1.7 GreyLife debacle, worse than anything I can remember in my 19 months in SL.

Whatever must be done to fix this, it must be absolutely the top priority of the Lindens to fix this.

Guess i've been lucky so far to have relatively good experience with SL performance, but today was indeed horrible. Half of my scripts and object wouldn't open for edit or rezz, with the message from asset server that no, it doesn't actually have such thing. Images and textures replaced with the "missing image" placeholder. Sim running with time dillation of literally 0.05 or so and 1-3 fps for no apparent reason until restarted, or plain crashing. People showing online while offline, random IMs getting lost in some black holes with both involved parties logged on or only arriving after relog....

It's really messy all around :/

And yes, no explanation or even single mention of the in-world trouble in the uberblog that i can see. Wasn't it supposed to streamline and speed up communication yadda yadda yadda? :<

It did streamline it. How much more streamlined can you get than no communication at all?

Ok that was nasty but its how it starts to feel after awhile.

I've had SL crash on me NUMEROUS times over the last two weeks just by clicking on objects that have scripts in them.

I have had SL crash on me SEVERAL times just by trying to take a snapshot.

I have had BAD teleport problems where it leaves my screen in the "requesting teleport" stage when clearly I'm already at the destination. If I hit cancel, I am indeed there, but can't move and have to log off and back on to resolve it. I only realized that I was at the destination because someone was talking to me and I heard them typing despite me being stuck on the "requesting teleport" screen with the progress bar.

I have had MAJOR lag issues in the sim I'm in, when I'm the only one in the entire sim.

I try to have conversations with people, but bursts of lag hit (with no indication at all on the bars on the top right of the screen), and then the conversation gets confusing because when the messages finally do appear, they are out of order from when they were typed.

I have zero faith in the programming team at SL. I don't think they have a clue what they're doing. Every patch fixes one thing and breaks ten others. They claim they've fixed things when clearly they haven't (the texture load problems we have/had weeks ago for example) and it takes them several attempts to actually get it "stable" and fixed. Asset servers are still flaking out left and right. And then to top it off, a back door into the databases was left wide open for anyone to waltz right on in and take whatever they want. I was willing to give the programming team the benefit of the doubt given the scope of the game, but come on, this is beyond ridiculous now. LL hire programmers who understand what the heck they're doing!

I am getting more and more disatisfied with the game only because of how LL is running it. The game itself is great, but if they keep handling things the way they have, people will be leaving in droves.

*off my soapbox*

Those interested in this thread may enjoy a song lyric penned by Madagascar Few and myself, which we have entitled "(A Slice Of) SL Pie," a parody of Don McLean's "American Pie."

Don't just talk, ACT!

Yesterday someone rezed a high prim item on my land and SL returned one of my items
The "Automatic Auto return bug" still Lives!

The big list.
1) Security of our payment info. Should I cancel my paypal link and create a new paypal session ID?
2) Pipeline issues with lost packets. The concept is sound, but it needs to be a full TCP implimentation that can deal with out of order packets.
3) Cache needs to store more and do it better. Why does it have to download the map textures every time I open the map window?
4) Give us tools to help improve SL. View only estate management and llReturnObject

I'm tired of sugesting things and plan on starting a new strategy.
ATACK the preview/beta grid.

I'll give $10,000L to the first person that can return the welcome area buildings without the proper permissions in a repeatable manor.

I found something that works to alleve the suckage of the SL grid: World of Warcraft. It REALLY gets the frustration out in front of you so you can kill it.

I have had so so game play over the last few days. One thing that annoys me alot.is the fact that they buddy list IS not working properly. Cant see who is on and if you msg them...you start talking to them and it is ok..but then maybe msg or so later..you get the there offline and the message will be stored later when in fact they are online. LL you have a great game..I have met some really nice people. The lag and the ongoing buddy lists is annoying...Do something to fix these problems.

I'm sorry

I'm sorry I'm accusing the grid of suckage. Please don't take it personally. My frustration with trying to live a Second Life is not your fault, and I know this and agreed to it when I accepted the Terms of Service of LL and SL.

Your response especially, Kelly, to Zoe Llewellyn's emotional post in SL Answers really made a huge impression on me and I want to apologize for any grief I may have caused by accusing the grid of sucking.

From: Kelly Linden

We are sorry for these issues, I am personally sorry for these issues.

You are not personally responsible for the asset server Kelly. I wish you a better day and week and high fives when the asset server starts working again. I'd come there and buy you a beer if I lived in SF, and since I don't, I'm sending Taco to buy you a beer :)

SL may not suck, but performance does, at this point; however, I know that the Lindens as a whole are striving to make it better.

Just hoping that when I log in to the NEW, IMPROVED grid here in a little while, that things are ar least somewhat better. :)

Oh, and Sans... you know Taco will drink it all up before he gets it to Kelly.

Shit, you are lucky. I've had my own sim CRASH three times this week with me being one of only two people (my wife being the other) in the entire sim and neither of us doing anything interesting.

Time Dilation is all over the board, too.

I did downgrade to Basic on one of my accounts, and will probably be doing so for my primary account soon. It just doesn't make sense to be paying as much as I do for the quality of service I am experiencing :(

Technically speaking....

Technically speaking even my realm in WoW was down today - and as priest I am often at risk - but my druid rocks - so yes it helps work out the SL blues from regular downtimes ( at much less cost I might add) - good thing, I think - technically speaking of course

Yeah, mine was down all day Tuesday so I just made a new shammy on another server, which is one thing WoW has going for it. When one server is down it's not the whole game down. Just make a new avatar and continue playing. :)
