I have been having the same problems too, but I have been asking friends in world with pc's and they seem to be having the same problems too, so maybe its not just a mac problem?

yeah i have been getting high packet loss too, plus turning certain ways everything is blurry, movement choppy now more than before. fps dropped down now way more than before when moving. I stay still there good but soon as i move it drops to half of what it was, dont remember it dropping that much before. Last time i seen any improvement after an update was 1.3 i think it was, but since then its been other way for me. Well 1.4 wasnt to bad. just dont know about 1.5 yet?

Ditto over here.
After some time online, the sim FPS tend to drop and/or the packet loss begins to rise. I am pretty sure it is not related to my ISP since they have not done any changes.
When it gets frustrating, there have been times I log out, come back to the same location and the FPS is fine and dandy.
I hope this gets some attention with recent upcoming patches.

More of the same...

Packet loss... Partial rez... Blurry textures... Choppy FR... and an accumulated effect where performance continues to decline until I lock up or re-start the app.

Now Even Worse!
09-09-2004 16:07
Count me in for all of the above...
But now after this afternoon's update, my situation is even worse and my (once-lovely) av is rendering headless, limbless and with very jagged clothing... black lines all over the world which was SL... anyone know what I can do?

My immediate problem with ugliness was solved by unchecking the Avatar Vertex Program checkbox in the Preferences menu... (edited to remove reference to pic I can't seem to upload... operator error... maybe tomorrow)

Rendering

Well after reading all your comments, I am (ironically) feeling better about my 6 hour old purchase. I just got a 15" powerbook and it is reallllllly choppy and slow on SL right now. I was starting to feel sick to my stomach that I just wasted a lot of money coming back to macword (I defected for a while but I repented, hehe) ... at first I thought my ATI card was giving me the issues, but it shouldnt be THAT bad. So I am going to hope that it is just this verson for the mac and that it will be corrected at some point. If anyone can point me to optimizing my graphics card (if this is even possible) on a 15" PB that would realllllly be GREAT. I'd like to use this on SL without crashing into things when they finally catch up with my screen. Any comments, please -Lizzie

PL as high as 50 percent, sim FPS down to around 20 in my home sim of De Haro (with only me in sim - down from 1300-1500), client FPS usually around 1-3, rendering weirdness and partial texturing, though I was not bit by the avatar vertex program bug. This is on 1 GHz iBook G4 with ATI Radeon 9200 32 MB. It was better before 1.5. Numbers on my 700 MHz iMac G4 (GeForce 2MX 32 MB) are a little better for client FPS than iBook, other issues are the same. Ironic that GeForce performance is noticeably better, when the Radeon 9200 is actually a much better card for all other tasks than SL. I know, in this day and age, I am running ghetto hardware, but much as I would like to, I can't just buy a PC to play SL. Before 1.5 I could get 15-20 FPS in an empty, uncluttered sim. I hope this can be improved. Thanks.

ditto to all above
09-14-2004 05:31
again ... ditto to all above for me each "update" since 1.41 has been a progressive downgrade particularly dissapointed with the sound issues I have to which I've had no official reply, even to my bug reports. This is the only OS X app I have that can totally freeze the system. I know it's free, and I shouldnt really complain because actually it's the best thing since sliced bread afaik. BUT I really would like to see some feedback from LL or the developers on this forum at least occasionally ! Let us know you're listening LL please.

Much the same experience here..... Very choppy and laggy since 1.5 - really spoils the experience Slooow rendering. Some of the latter 1.4 builds seemed snappier. Sometimes movement is near impossible as pressing a key causes a delayed movement and overshoot, just can't get to where I am going. Even editing text in an IM window is hard work at times. Certainly a struggle to interact with people. Packet loss nearly always on the go - huge at times - up to 110% ! SL sometimes crashes when closing application, only app that does so for me. Boosting net connection from 512kbps to 1Mbps has very little effect t seems. I have most of the graphics settings turned down and sound turned off to try and help the performance as much as I can. I'm in the UK and on a 4 year old graphite G4 PowerMac (old 100Mhz bus) upgraded to 1.25Ghz, with 1.5Gb RAM, Radeon 8500 and using a Netgear DG834G wireless router. Would have thought that that would suffice. Planning to buy a G5 when money allows but how much of the problem is my Mac and how much is down to the SL client I wonder ? I really love SL - but the performance is making life hard.

I should probably not trot this out again, but feeling compelled to at this point.
For Mac users, 1.5 is a significant performance downgrade from 1.4.x.
It may be a beta, but Mac users are paying the same to play as their Windows comrades. I have one system that qualifies as supported hardware and one that does not. The one that does not runs SL better than the one that does, probably because it has Nvidia graphics, though the Radeon in the supported system is a much newer, faster card. Both are typically seeing low to mid single-digit framerates in populated areas. It is frustrating. I know several Lindens are on Macs, and I think we all deserve to enjoy at least a minimally competent experience on supported hardware.
Here's hoping Mac performance issues get some priority in the near future. I can say without any hesitation that a move to Windows for the sake of SL is just not in the cards.

Hear hear !
I have an SL friend who is on a PC and I have one heck of a time just keeping up with her movements in-world, she moves smoothly while I seem to jerk about like a club dancer in a strobe light !
If the Mac client really is the cause of this disparity, it would be so good to see things improved soon.

My mac isn't too good at running SL in the first place, I have an iBook G4 1ghz.. so it's basically the minimum. I didn't notice any difference from 1.4 to 1.5... I get the same 2fps on average. I do know that the entire time that I've been in SL, the Mac version has improved dramatically. The video is faster and looks better (iBook has an ATI chip, so it had problems) and it is actually usable now.. for the most part. It may not be smooth, but in older versions I wouldn't think of going into crowded areas - now I can go to big events, as long as I only stand in one spot.
