Hello, I'm new to Second Life an I'm having problems with the game. When I log on all I see is a few palms, blue sky, gray land and bubble name boxes. No people, buildings not even me. Can somebody help me figure this thing out, please?

Hello ;
The same situation happens to me too. I'm using a PC with an ATI Radion 7000 graph card, and with 512 Mb of Ram. The computer processor is a Pentium 4 working at 2,8 Mhz In terms of internet connection I'm using 8 Mbit broadband cable Is this solvable ? Many thanks in advance |

I'm using a PC with an ATI Radion 7000 graph card, and with 512 Mb of Ram. The computer processor is a Pentium 4 working at 2,8 Mhz Sorry to have to tell you this, but your computer is ancient and way underpowered. The parts you've listed were current in 2001. For a comparison, you're basically trying to drive a 1972 Pinto in a modern NASCAR race. There's just no way it could keep up. Your most significant bottleneck is your video card. It is below SL's minimum system requirements. http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php For a Radeon, you need at least an 8500. Yours is a generation too old. And even back in the day when it was current, it was the lowest of the low end in its series. The second problem is that you've only got 512MB of RAM. SL needs at least 2GB to run well, four times what you've got. Also, just as important as your RAM's amount is its type. Judging by the age of your other components, I'm betting you've probably got DDR. The fastest DDR ever made (which is probably faster than yours) is only half the speed of today's middle-of-the-road DDR2 (what most people have), and only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the speed of high-end DDR2 or DDR3 (what gamers and enthusiasts tend to get). If the other components were up to snuff, your Pentium 4 could run SL. But it would never run it terribly well, even under the best of circumstances. Bottom line, your machine is 8 years out of date. It's high time to get a new one. Sorry if that's not the answer you were hoping for, but it is the truth. |

I'm not sure on speed, We have Comcast High Speed Internet, and as for graphics car, I have no idea. We bought the computer from Gateway. in I think 2002. Is there anyway to figure it out by going through the computer?

Is there anyway to figure it out by going through the computer? To get your CPU and video card information go to your device manager and click on the display adapter (for video) and processor (for CPU)........you get the basic information about type from that. To get more information just double click on the expanded lines. Check the tabs to get any driver information. Comcast means you have a cable connection.......even the slowest cable connection should be more than adequate for SL to run satisfactorily. However, I think Comcast is still trottling some bandwidth to high usage customers......but I haven't heard complaints lately so it's evidently not a huge problem anymore. |

I'm not real tech savvy, I can get online, and move folders around and that's about it! lol. I have Windows XP, and am at the Control Panel, I'm gonna have to be walked through this, sorry |

We bought the computer from Gateway. in I think 2002. Chances are you're in the same boat as DarthAyrgill, sorry. Your computer is VERY old, almost seven years. If it were a dog, it would be 49. Since it's a computer, it's more like 490. It's ancient. So you know, desktop computers really should be replaced, or at least significantly upgraded, every 2-4 years to keep them usable. Laptops should be replaced every 1-2 years, 3 at the very most, depending on how high-powered they are to start with. No computer in the world can be expected to run cutting edge software, seven years later, with no hardware upgrades. I have Windows XP, and am at the Control Panel, I'm gonna have to be walked through this 1. If you've already launched the Control Panel, double-click on System. (Alternatively, you can right click on My Computer, and select Properties. It does the same thing.) The System Properties window will open. 2. In the System Properties window, you'll see a bunch of tabs at the top. By default, the General tab will be selected. You'll find your CPU and RAM described here, under where it says "Computer". Make note of what it says. 3. Now, to identify your video card, you'll need to launch Device Manager. To do that, first click on the Hardware tab. When the Hardware tab is selected, you'll see a button labeled Device Manager, toward the top of the page. Click on it. The Device Manager window will open. 3. In the Device Manager window, you'll see a bunch of labels for all the various types of devices in your computer, each with a little plus signs next to it. To see what you've got for each device, click its plus sign. Your video card will be listed under Display Adapters. Let us know what you find. |
