It actually mostly depends on how old your router is, and how they implemented their software. Many older hardware routers had relatively low limits as to the number of simultaneous connections that they could maintain at once - so if you run multiple Second Life sessions at once, they will often drop one (or many) of the connections. This can also happen if you're running peer->peer file sharing (or other) software at the same time as running Second Life.
Try doing a firmware upgrade of the router first, to see if that fixes the problem. If not, then a new router from a reputable manufacturer should fix the problem. Be advised that some people have had issues with some cheap off-brand routers. Unfortunately, we haven't verified specific models as being problematic as of yet. - Doug |

Both me and my SO connect through a linksys router, never had any problems...
We have been online in SL at the same time many times. |

As Doug said, it also depends on the age of the router. It seems that most Linksys routers, especially older ones, have issues. Some new models may also have issues. It seems that the more expensive it is, the better.

I live in a triplex and the whole place is wired to the internet through one dsl connection. At one time we had 7 computers linked on our net using the internet together. We had the same sort of problem at first.
I'm not a techie, but the techies I live next too explained the problem as best they could to me. They said the older routers used sort of an either/or way to split the connection. Meaning only one computer at any one time had the pipe, and the others were just hanging till their turn came up. Not a problem surfing, but a big one with online-games. We upgraded a bit to a router that had more intelligent control, evenly splitting the pipe. What's the moral of this babble? Just that yeah, older routers with older firmware aren't built to handle the demands of a gaming household. |

ooooo...ooh good information, since it looks like we're going to have to get a router here too.
I need to find a 5 (preferably 6) computer router for a decent price that can handle MAJOR traffic (up to 3 online games going at once, at times) via a cable modem. arg _____________________

I use a 486 running Linux with 2 network cards and a really cheap ethernet hub. No problems at all with routing stuff and/or multiple connections (haven't tried it recently with SL but I don't see why it wouldn't still work). Also acts as a DNS and mail server as well as a firewall.

Routers tie together different subnets. You can pick up an 8 port 100 mhz switch and a firewall box for pretty cheap. The firewall box is your router between your home network and your isp/the internet. |

I got me one of them there 4 port dlinks for around $50 (I got one as in got as a wedding gift). You should hit someone up for an early wedding gift.
![]() I was wondering if you can update your linksys models firmware like my dlink. That may fix it... then again my training only tells me what they do and how to hook them up to networks... not how the different brands work. |

Actually, that's exactly the item I've been looking at, EXCEPT that I'm worried about the Linksys bit. Need to find a different type I guess... _____________________

I still recomend DLink or Netgear. For 5 computers.... you can look but I think most routers are 4 port, which means get the router ($45 ) and a switch ($34). Then you have 7 available ports (3 on the main, four on the switch, one port on each going to each other) for $80. Note, I did buy that switch for $30 from best buy, so you may be able to get a better price. Then you can expand if you need to. Heh.

I still don't understand when Linksys, one of the top makers of routers became a bad choice.

Im gonna side with the people who advocate *not* getting a linksys router.
I got one myself a few months ago. Sometimes it sporatically craps out. ==Chris |

Mine went craptastic on me and I talked to tech support about .... 8 times. Each person had a different firmware version that they liked and said I should try flashing to that version. One person had 2 favorites. You got that right - 9 firmware versions. I tried flashing each one and none of them fixed it. I finally got to Tech_Support_09 and they said "You flashed that how many times?" "Well, once when I first had problems then 9 times each at the request of your techs" "In 2 weeks you flashed it 10 times?" "Yeah" "Ok you burnt out that rom by now, send it in for a replacement."
Yay. Get replacement - the craptastic ac/dc converter didn't work. I bought a universal one from Target, it worked for a good while, about 4 months or so, before it blew with a loud pop. Threw the linksys in the trash. Went and bought a d-link, plugged it in and havn't looked at it since, didn't require any setup or configuration or nuthin. I had to mess with the linksys settings the first time I got it to get anything to work. D-link just worked. _____________________

Well, this is not consumer advice, just my experience, your mileage may vary...
I got my first Linksys back when they were the only consumer product of the kind. Back when Jesse Berst ran Anchordesk as it was still a useful thing to subscribe to. I was pretty happy with it. But since it was new, I noticed there were new flash updates to it every few weeks. SOME of these were bad. After downloading a bad one I was carefull to let the new ones "age" for a while before I tried them. After a year of so the firmare stabilized quite a bit. I never had any trouble with it after that. At some point I decided to get a wireless router and thinking it looked more "professional" I went with a Netgear MR314. I also had very little trouble with it, and even made use of a handy feature it has that allows you to run a web server behind your firewall. It automatically updates dyndns.org whenever your IP address changes. Very handy. Only problem with this is that once you get it all set up and try to access your web page, it resolves your IP address, realizes you are an internal user, and prompts you for the password to reconfigure the router. Which means you have to call a friend to tell you if your set-up is still working. Duh. Well this annoys me, and as far as I know it still hasn't been fixed. So when I started the process of moving to a new house, I got a wireless Linksys for that location. It doesn't have the same handy dyndns.org notification built in (but it turns out dyndns.org is recommending you don't use router based notification anyway, so I now let the PC do it) and it does allow me to hit my own IP address (or at least it does a good job of faking it) which makes me very happy. This is a "bread-and-butter" product for Linksys and I think they do a pretty good job of supporting it. I'm not so sure about some of the others. |

A few years ago I had a problem installing drivers for a simple NIC...nothing fancy, just a network card. I forget what the problem was exactly but I ended up discovering that there was a file missing which I somehow located somewhere, copied that somewhere, and it worked fine.
I've always considered Linksys the low-cost choice for cheap or poor people to use IF they don't mind possible problems and IF they have the knowledge to troubleshoot them. _____________________
