Constant crashes.

Hello,

I bought a new state-of-the-art computer and to the extent of my regret, Second Life is giving me hassle on it. I've tried both the 1.20 and 1.19 clients and both crash within seconds of me logging in.

Sometimes I can login, walk around, rotate the camera, but within a minute or two, something will trigger a crash systematically.

I'm hoping I can receive some help here.

Here are my computer's specifications:

Windows XP Professional x64bit Edition.
Intel Pentium III Xeon Processor (2 CPUs) dual core, ~3.0GHz
2x 2047MB RAM (So basically 4 Gigs of RAM)
ATI Radeon HD 4870 - 512MB memory.

If any more information is required, please do let me know. I'm desperate on playing SL again.

Thank you in advance.

Are you running the most recent drivers for you video card? 64 bit operating systems have a somewhat cloudier history running SL than 32 bit operating systems. Make sure you have the proper drivers.

I've updated my drivers, yes. At least I think so.

How can I figure out if I have the latest drivers?

Go to your device manager and click on your display adapter. When that dialog box pops up go to drivers, then properties.......it should tell you your driver version. Write it down. Then go to ATI web site and search for drivers for your card by your operating system. If the latest driver for your card is higher in number than the one you wrote down it is more recent.

Is it really 2 Pentium IIIs?

Is it a computer with a brand name and a model number or is is a refurbished server or a homebrew bought on eBay or what? I ask that just because the Pentium III and dual core don't seem to fit together to me. One might find a dual processor system with two ancient Pentium III's in it. I might just be ignorant of current processor names, though.

Is your Quicktime up to date?

Do you have Silverlight installed?

Have you got the ports opened in your router and firewall?

Have you searched for HD4870 at jira.secondlife.com and in this forum's search function?

Pentium III's never made it anywhere close to 3GHz, and were never made in dual core variations.

Not to mention that no Pentium III's ever supported the x86_64 instructions, thus preventing them from running Windows XP x64.

It doesn't really matter what the processor is, but they aren't P3's.

It's NOT your Computer, NOT your ATI Cards/Drivers fault. It's the SL Viewer!

Hi Folks,

I've been experianced strange behaviour like Textures mismatch, very slow rendering during Texture load and total SL Viewer crash, right after login with a ATI 4850 card, using the latest ATI Driver v8.8.
I've opened a JIRA issue, right here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8717

Please login to JIRA, and VOTE for this issue, so it will become more & more importand to be fixed ASAP. This is the only way to get rid of this delayed attention of Linden Lab, to support ATI Cards PROPERLY in the SL Viewer!

This urgently need to be debugged and fixed by the LL developer team.
Hey Guys, since the ATI 4850 Card is so rockin' cheap while it bring's a tremendous boost to your PC, it'll be spread on the market rapidly during the next month. So this has to be paid attention...

If you VOTE for it, also WATCH this issue on JIRA, so LL will notice there's a lot Users out there, using a ATI Card and struggling with the SL Viewer (wich is btw the ONLY application/game nowadays, that has such problems with a ATI Card).

Thanks for your attention & voting for this, to help a lot of SL Residents, playing SL with a ATI Card, BETTER.

Cheers,
Dandare
