I bug'd this, and alerted lindens, but posting here to see if anyone else is having problems.
It appears for new scripts, llSay is broken.
Case in point:
-Create any prim. -Click Contents tab -Click New Script -Save the default "hello avatar" script -The script should immediately make the object say "Hello avatar" and should say "touched" when touched. It does neither.

/RR I just did your test Hiro and my new object said "Hello Avatar!"and "Touched." I think Raphael might be right.

/RR *giggle* I did that once, and totally forgot I had done it. Then, trying to troubleshoot some scripting, and I couldn't get any responses from the object... I almost went insane trying to figure it out. ^^

Dear god, Object was muted.
*so embarassed*
What made me bug report it was the fact that another person had the same stupid problem.
Maybe this is something LL can permanently unmute?

No, the correct behaviour is the current one. If there could be some kind of indicator icon to show that something had been said by a muted object, that might be a better idea.

You can usually see the particles around the object when it "speaks". A good sign you've muted it. And don't ask me how I know so much about this /RR
