Hello, I just got accepted to SL, I had no trouble installing it, but immediately upon entering server I am overcome by red dots that swarm all over the screen. This is followed by either SL or my computer crashing, and if my computer doesn't crash, I have to reboot b/c the red dots are still covering the screen.

Tried tinkering with my settings to no avail, this was a problem in 0.3.2 and 0.3.3

Relevant computer information:
Windows Xp
Geforce3 Ti 200, up-to-date driver
1.7 gigahertz p4 processor
Cable modem
Healthy hd, as far as I know

Any help would be appreciated, I can't do anything at all ingame, so I've yet to experience any part of SL. Hoping to get started soon, I'm dying to know what the game's like =/

hrmm i'm only taking a wild stab - have you tried re-installing?
I used to have a gf3 card and would get crazy bands of color when i got a gf4 that helped some.

Not that I can tell ya to go oot and buy hardware. If it continues to happen go submit a bug report complete with log files to support@lindenlab.com

Status update

Update: I downloaded some new drivers, specifically a motherboard and audio driver, and spent most of last night tinkering with the preferences to see if I could get SL to work at any of the settings.

Since the problem is red dots all over my monitor followed by SL closing, I assumed it was a gfx problem, so I set all settings to minimum, 16 meg gfx card, 256 megs of ram, all options off, even AGP, texture quality object detail lowest settings, and draw distance/avatar composite limit lowered several values. Amazingly, this worked, and I managed to log into world server without crashing. So I logged out and began raising settings one at a time, starting with turning AGP on, and then loading back in to see what exactly was the problem. Loaded fine, logged out, raised gfx card to 32 megs, worked fine, logged out, raised memory to 384 megs of ram, logged in, game crashed. Tried lowering specs to previous settings, which had worked, but the game promptly crashed, and after continued testing, refused to work at any combination of display settings.

So, this problem has something to do with the gfx card and my ram, being that at 32 meg gfx card and 384 meg ram display settings this bug appeared, however it continued to occur even when I lowered the settings to values that had worked. Possibly a new gfx card might fix it, as Flyk mentioned, but I don't plan on buying a new one until The Geforce4 FX series is out for a while.

If you want to reproduce the bug, try fiddling with your settings.

Twenty-Three Skidoo,

Have you had any luck recently getting it to work? I'm having the exact same problem. Tried uninstalling, redownloading, and reinstalling to a different hard drive. I followed what you said you did, but to no avail; as soon as I login, I get a screen covered with red dots that occasionally change to blue dots. Then if I try to ctrl+alt+del, my system crashes and I have to reboot.

I'm running:
Windows XP Pro
PIII 866MHz
512 megs of RAM
GeForce 3 Ti 500 with Detonator 41.09 drivers
cable modem

All of my other drivers are up to date, as well.

Graphics mode

Hi Twenty-three,

Can you confirm that your grahpics card is running in AGP mode?

To determine:
Right click on the desktop, select properties.
Click on the settings tab, press the advanced button
Select the Geforce 3ti 500 tab and look at the Bus Type.

It should say "AGP". Does it? If not, what does it say?

Thanks,

-Peter

Just a note that I'm having the same problem as Twenty-three and that my graphics card IS running in AGP mode.

I am using the 41.09 driver atm, and I am in AGP mode, it says AGP 4x under bus mode. Perhaps it's the geforce 3 line?

Martini, have you tried lowering all settings to minimums, turning AGP on and off, and tried logging in multiple times? That's how I managed to get SL to work.

Yes, Twenty-three, I think I've tried every combination I could come up with. ;) Still haven't had any success, though.
