Painful permissions bugs (or features?)

OK, there's a lot of complexity here, and not all of it is figured out yet. So look for further posts as more data is collected.

1. Grant Modify Permissions is hamstrung. This was a VERY useful tool for group builds prior to 1.1. If you trust someone you can give them permission to mess with your stuff. Unfortunately, it no longer gives you ALL permissions, and I for one want it to. Specifically - you cannot check or uncheck any of the permissions in the edit window INCLUDING lock and unlock. This means if the owner forgot a few items or scripts here and there, you cannot work on them. This defeats the purpose of sharing this level of trust, and really hampers collaboration. I note that you CAN still be destructive and delete stuff. Give us back the ability to be creative, too.

2. Inventory transfers are bugged. I have repeatedly had troubles exchanging things via inventory drop - if you set permissions in an object and then take it into your inventory to send to someone else - often at the other end they no longer have the permissions you gave them.

3. Objects in inventory, and in an object's inventory, do not retain permissions given to them while they are in inventory.
I have several examples of this - I was handed a building in a box, and if you examine permissions of the objects in the inventory, they all appear to give full permissions, but when they are pulled out into the world, they revert somehow, and become no copy, no modify, AND locked, even though they are mine! And of course even though the original owner intended that I modify them for him - I can't unlock! Once again this defeats the purpose of trying to collaborate.

More study is underway, but I'd look for a bug in the way the lock option functions now. And more to the point, please make Grant Modify Permissions mean something again. If I'm going to trust someone with the rights to delete all my stuff, I mean to trust them with the rights to make it better as well!

Great summary of the current permissions problems Ananda.

I've been running into all of these problems lately, and they can be very frustrating and time consuming, especially when you are working together with someone on a project.

Here's an update on the bug hunt:

It turns out that permissions for objects in another object's inventory cannot be set without pulling them out of the inventory into the world, setting them there, and then putting them or saving them back. Attempting to set them while still in inventory apparently is a different set of permissions.

Permissions can be set right, though, if you go the long way around like this.
