When running sl on my vista running laptop, the words inside the inventory and notecards have the top of the letters cut off. I can run it on my other laptop and dexk top which both run XP and it does not do this. any suggestions would be apprecated.

It sounds like you may be running your screen resolution something less than the "native" resolution of your monitor. Set your resolution to whatever that native resolution is for your particular monitor. Also make sure you are running SL in a window.
That's about the only two things I can think of right now.

Another thing to try would be changing the UI scale slightly, perhaps making it .975 instead of 1.

Problem being solved it may not matter, but the problem might have to do with whether you have "use resolution independent scale" set. Having that turned on should make SL's interface look the same at different resolutions.
