Hey, my graphics are all screwed up after I installed an ATI Radeon 4770. I can't really explain what's going on except that I'm having graphical issues, like black lines coming up from my avie's hair when I'm walking, the background is screwed up. I was using an nvidia without any problems but now all of sudden everything is screwed up. I'm not getting any lag, the game still plays smoothly.

Did you go to the site and update the drivers? Even though its newly installed there will still be newer updates for the driver.

Another that might be causing the problems is if you still have the old card or the drivers still installed from your old card. Be sure everything is uninstalled from the old card.

Do a disc clean - including your SL cache.

Hope this helps :)

Send it back and get an Nvidia graphics card.

You might try going into graphics preferences, under hardware options, uncheck the option for "Enable VBO". ATI cards don't get along well with Vertex Buffer Objects for some reason.

Thought of one more thing that may help - in SL go to your prefences then to graphics and hit the "recommened settings" button this way SL will auta set to the best grapics for your new card.

Wow you prefer Nvidia over Radeon thats a first for me. What is about the Nvidia you like better? I have always been told that Radeon is better for gaming.

I have the VBO checked in my preference and have not had any problems but that is nice to know. :)

All of my drivers up to date. And this is the only game I've having this problem with, and I wouldn't know how to uninstall my old cards drivers, lol.

First time? I'd think it would be about 50/50 between ATI/Nvidia fanboys.

Anyway, whatever SL does with OpenGL drivers seems to work better with Nvidia than with ATI. ATI makes great cards, but with SL, Nvidia seems to work better.

Try downgrading drivers to version 9.1.

Milla's answer is the best one. Return the ATI card and get an nVidia card. ATI consistently refuses to abide by OpenGL standards, so no ATI card will ever work with SL as well as its nVidia counterpart.

That said, if you want to keep the ATI card, then the first thing to try, as Milla also pointed out, is to disable vertex buffer objects. ATI cards are notorious for failing to handle VBO's properly. Whenever anyone with ATI hardware is having trouble in SL, disabling VBO's is always the primary suggestion.

@Mystic: I'm not sure where you've been getting your information. nVidia cards have always been far more popular among gamers than ATI cards have. According to Mercury Research, nVidia actually has a 67% share of the discrete graphics card market right now. That obviously means means that people who buy discrete cards prefer nVidia 2 to 1 over ATI. And who are the primary buyers of discrete graphics cards? Gamers.

That 2:1 statistic is pretty impressive on its own, but it's even more so when you consider that nVidia cards tend to be more expensive than ATI cards. Gamers are nothing if not willing to pay for quality.

ATI tends to do well with those who want a less expensive alternative, but that's about as far is goes, to paint with the broadest possible brush. To claim that ATI hardware is "better for gaming" simply isn't accurate, in the opinions of most gamers. If it were, those market share numbers would look very different.

ok I hate to do this but

XBOX has a nvidia geforce 3, but after the first year or so of launch titles microsoft already had its directx ported over the the xbox sdk and optimized for the xbox hardware

the need for opengl based interface quickly died off in the xbox

360 comes out announcing (among other things) dropping nvida as the gpu supplier, and all 360's were equipped with a ATI gpu

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenos_(graphics_chip)

yea it sucks, but its true

(nvida is better at open GL)

Thanks for the correction, Osgeld. Looks like I was indeed in error. The Xbox info I'd been looking at was outdated. I'll remove the console section of my post, since it was wrong, and I'll leave just the PC part.

Different problem ... same card.

Replaced a Geforce 7600GS with an ATI 4770 - the reason being the 7600GS has been found the likely culprit for endless random bluescreens of my PC (also replciated in another PC but that's another story.....) and the ATI card is the best bang for buck for what I want.

Ever since upgrading to the 4770, the SL client will randomly shut down. No error messages appear. I'm using the latest ATI drivers downloaded from the ATI website. I'm using the recommended graphics settings. Upgraded to the SL client. Don't want to change back to NVIDIA because I've got other reasons for using this card, as well I'm running an AMD machine with a CrossFire capable motherboard allowing me an upgrade path :)

Try the snowglobe viewer cass. Normal viewer always crashed my ATI HD4850 even with minimal graphics settings.

Switched to Snowglobe, sl is flying with anisotropic filtering and AA on (but leave VBO set to off)

*on a side note, can't log into the sl world at all past 5 minutes, wierd, server issues their end*
