It sounds like you should review the system requirements for SL, which are at http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php .
You might also use the Can You Run it? site at http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest . To try to answer your question people would need some system specs, such as: What kind of computer? Type of processor, make and model of system, things like that. What operating system? How much ram? What video card? How much video ram? What version of SL? What version of video driver? _____________________

You are apparently below the minimum specs for ram.
That is not all the system information you can find. That might be all you are willing to take the time to find, but it is certainly not all the information you can find. You were given an url to use that will report more information than what you provided. You can get system information using the System Information utility that comes built in to Windows XP. Start Programs Accesories System Tools System Information will give you some system information. You could use Google to find system information utilities by putting freeware system information in as search terms. _____________________

One thing to be aware of, is the SL client default setting, towards texture memory allocation. In the graphics tab, click the hardware button, reduce the texture memory slider to around half to two thirds of your actual graphics card on board memory (no good for MB mounted GC chips that use system ram), the default is usually far more than your system can actually afford.
Also XP is now on SP3, it has greater network routing functions, would advise updating. _____________________

You didn't give what kind of video card and amount of video ram, not that I can see.
The brand and product line, Compaq Presario, along with "System Model PW532AA-ABA SR1403WM NA520", indicate that you have a Presario SR1403WM, which comes with an integrated video processor that uses up to 64 megs of system ram for video processing, which is consistent with your initial statement that you have 442 megs of system ram. You should be able to get some video specs by doing Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display, Settings, Advanced. It's also possible that whatever you used to produce that big chunk of system information has the video specs but in a different place from the part you copied and pasted. I'm not finding the specs on the onboard video processor but it is probably not good enough for running SL, or at least not good enough for running it very well. It is possible that updating your video driver would improve things well enough to get you from a state of crashing to a state of at least being able to run. I think you have an SiS onboard video processor which means you are most likely going to need a video card. I think you have an AGP 8X slot on your system, which is the now outdated kind of video slot, but you can still buy AGP cards. You will want to find out what wattage your power supply is to make sure you have enough power. The stock power supply is almost certainly too small to support much of a video card. http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch4&model_id=55798 The above link has some supposedly compatible video cards, but again, you might need to upgrade the power supply to make on of those cards work. If you are going to pursue upgrading, you would also want more system ram. I suspect you have two 256megs chips filling your two dimm slots, so to increase memory you'd probably want either two 512 meg chips to replace both 256 meg chips or two 1 gigs chips to replace both 256 meg chips. If you do have one 512 meg chip and an empty memory slot then you might be able to find one 512 meg chip to add into the empty one. It is of course possible that you have some other problem such as a corrupted driver that might be fixed by reinstalling drivers, or one of the oddball problems like Microsoft Silverlight causing a problem. As always with crashing your should check to make sure your fans are clean and spinning properly. _____________________
