Today has been a very laggy bad day for SL. There were bad issues abounds. Try again tomorrow and hopefully things will be better. ) Congrats on that new laptop!

What are your Graphics set to in SL?
What FPS are you getting? (control shift 1 toggles the stats display)
What kind of lag are you talking about?
Can you put a video card in it?

Can you put a video card in it? Not very computer savvy, but I'll answer the questions I know. The lag is the kind where I can barely move - whether I'm in a crowded place or not. When I am around people dancing, everyone looks like a slideshow - the movement is all choppy. And not exactly sure if I can put a video card in it or not.

doesnt mean anything
you could have the most pimp system ever and if the grid is crap you cant move
on the other hand the grid could be going just fine and your system is choking
hold ctrl+shift+1 to see your fps, if your over 10 and cant move its the servers

First, download and install the latest driver from the Intel website. Second, turn down all of the graphics options in SL. If you're getting acceptable performance after that, start increasing the settings little by little until you reach a compromise between performance and quality that you can live with.

There is no way you will get decent performance with a GM965. The FPS problem was somewhat alleviated with the prior release candidate but it came back again to some degree with the release that just came out.
You can alleviate it somewhat by using full screen mode and keeping your resolution down to 1024 x 768. Will look a little funny if you have a wide screen, but the freezing should be minimized.
On your graphics, all quality sliders use custom with all quality sliders except object all the way to the left. Object you can slide maybe 1/4 to the right and still be ok.
The default turns off local lighting and uses low terrain. You can turn these back up and should be ok there.
Lastly on the hardware options button, make sure texture memory is at the minimum setting.
I hope LL will some day be able to find a way to get working with the GM965. There are a LOT of them out there.
