Hey guys, HELP
I just built a brand new pc the other day and got online and everything looks nifty. I'm able to download SL, log in, but immediately after logging on, I see my virtual world for a whopping 2 second, all seems perfectly rezzed, and then it crashes. I tried reinstalling drivers etc. no avail.
I'm running a quad core proc (Q9550) **INTEL, ATI Radeon X4850 512mb vid card and Vista Home 64 sp1
The only thing I now wonder after reading one post here, I'm hooked up to a router, my upstairs laptop is wireless. My new pc is connected to the router, and not directly to my cable connection.. could this be a problem? (i'm going to check later when I get time to fiddle.
*sobs*.. help, please....

I can relate.... *sigh*

From: Genvieve Pontoppidan the more i read, the more i'm becoming disappointed. Hi Genvieve... I can relate... I'm still having the same problem here as well after 2+ weeks with my new PC... I've tried everything imaginable (other than reformmatting the hard drive)... nothing's worked so far. I'm out of ideas. And I guess I'm also out of luck getting SL to run on this new PC. *sigh* I *hope* you find a working solution, fix, work-around, or whatever that does allow you to get some version of SL to run on your new PC. If you do... *please* post a message on exactly what you did for the rest of us that are still looking for a solution. (Thanks) Good luck!

from what I've read thus far, it's an ATI vs SL issue, and the drivers are causing a ruckus. so to speak. since I'm not having any issue whatsoever otherwise, I'm just going to wait it out. I just built this thing three days ago.. I'm not downgrading anything just for SL. Hopefully soon, very soon, bugs will get fixed and I can once again rearrange my virtual furniture. I'm paying $25 bucks a month for virtual grass I can't virtually mow. lol

ATI & Nvidia --- OpenGL Games
08-30-2008 07:16
Hi Genvieve... the problem is affecting people with ATI video cards as well as also affecting people with Nvidia video cards, too. I tried both ATI & Nvidia video cards to try to resolve the problem - no luck. It looks like it's tied in to mainly (if not exclusively) to running games that are OpenGL oriented.

It might just be my imagination but I read a lot of threads from people having similar problems on new, relatively high performance computers......computer that, on the surface, should run SL with ease. There appears to be one common spec for most (though not all) computers having this problem. That is Vista 64 bit (actually, any 64 bit OS). I know there are people with that OS that do not have any issues.....but there are an awful lot that do. And, it seems to effect both ATI and nVidia.......but ATI premarily.
My suggestion is to search for drivers that are 64 bit specific. The consolation is that 64 bit operating systems are coming.......they will eventually be the "only" systems available (like 32 bit OS's took over 16 bit systems about 10 years ago). The hardware manufacturers will have to develop the dirvers that will work. Right now, it's sort of a transition period where the market is not quite there for hardware manufacturers to devote many resources to that area. You might contact the manufacturers to inquire about how much priority they are giving such development. I don't think it's anything LL can do something about. Microsoft is not going to back off on their push for it. Niether are the chip makers. The hardware people are the people who need the kick in the butt to get moving.

PLEASE VOTE for this JIRA Issue, to get rid of the ATI 48xx problem!
08-31-2008 11:47
Hi Folks, I've been experianced strange behaviour like Textures mismatch, very slow rendering during Texture load and total SL Viewer crash, right after login with a ATI 4850 card, using the latest ATI Driver v8.8. I've opened a JIRA issue, right here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8717Please login to JIRA, and VOTE for this issue, so it will become more & more importand to be fixed ASAP. This is the only way to get rid of this delayed attention of Linden Lab, to support ATI Cards PROPERLY in the SL Viewer! This urgently need to be debugged and fixed by the LL developer team. Hey Guys, since the ATI 4850 Card is so rockin' cheap while it bring's a tremendous boost to your PC, it'll be spread on the market rapidly during the next month. So this has to be paid attention... If you VOTE for it, also WATCH this issue on JIRA, so LL will notice there's a lot Users out there, using a ATI Card and struggling with the SL Viewer (wich is btw the ONLY application/game nowadays, that has such problems with a ATI Card). Thanks for your attention & voting for this, to help a lot of SL Residents, playing SL with a ATI Card, BETTER. Cheers, Dandare

Cross posting in different forums is against the TOS of the forums. Besides, it's irritating. So irritating, in fact, it would turn me completely against your cause..........I'm sure I'm not alone.

Seeing as how this is an issue for myself as well, I have no problem with this being discussed by adults.

From: Hiai Usobuki Seeing as how this is an issue for myself as well, I have no problem with this being discussed by adults. I'm referring to Dandare's post directly above mine.....the exact same post has been made in at least 6 different threads spread all over the forums. Once is enough. Posting the same thing in multiple threads/forums is against the forum TOS. It's also very irritatiing. The problem probably deserves a thread of it's own...........not piggybacked on someone else's thread. Pretty rude and self centered, in my opinion.

Cheers, Dandare seeing as you are able to at least log in some of the time, and you totally hijacked my thread with your LL blame game, I now will NOT vote. I don't blame LL lab for this. It's a driver issue most likely and I'm just going to bandage my other pc and hope for the best, and put a Nvidia graphics card in it. I'm totally pissed about it, because part of the reason i BUILT my friggin pc was I wanted to be very selective in my components, GPU especially to enhance my sl. don't you love irony.

I wont play against the TOS
08-31-2008 17:34
@Peggy
sorry, but i hoped to just let ppl know about this issue is been worked on, and also provide a solution (switch back to older catalyst drivers, as i explain in my jira issue). Wasn't meant to be offensive, by spreading this in this forum. yes, 6 times.
@Genvieve same to you. this wasnt meant to be offensive in any way. just to push this a bit forward, guys. And in particular, this is NOT a ATI driver issue, but a SL general viewer design problem. Hope this got clear by time. and btw myself bought 2 complete PC's during the last 3 month, just to get SL running better for me, but i bet on ATI, cuz it's cheaper and perform very well on any other apps, i use. So we indeed, share a place in the same boat. So think over your decision you made.
Cheers, Dandare

You might try earlier versions of the ATI drivers. Catalyst 8.7 or earlier.

interesting... so I gave it a go today, and was able to log in, and move via the arrow keys. I was perfectly fine until I touched the mouse.
tried again.. the second i tabbed over to the search key and hit enter.. crash.
I was in for about 2 minutes. Only when I touched the mouse or hit enter to bring up the search screen did it crash.
I just downloaded the 8.7 driver... going to see how this goes.

Did it refuse to run, or did it just give a warning?
Did you uninstall the 8.8 drivers and reboot before installing the 8.7?

the driver message only gave the option to select ok and promptly went to the crash logger.
I uninstalled 8.8, deleted all ATI files and rebooted then installed 8.7 that's when i received the invalid driver message.

I realy wonder if its the Ati drivers!!! try the new release candidate version ( read my thread: /111/88/275160/1.html ) I am still on 8.7 hotfix but it was the newest release cndidate of Second Life 1.21.0 (95157) (Second Life Release Candidate) that finaly made some features in the graphic tab accesable... all versions of sl befor this latest release candidate (1.21.0 ) dont support hardware skinning and avatar cloth... even tho the options are displayed but greyed out....this while LL claiming that this feature should have been available from catalyst 8.3 but that ati still hadnt fixxed this...lots of bull is what i say to that coz why is that feauture suddenly now available even while i m still on my old Catalyst drivers.... ??

I think it really does have something to do with ATI and some kind of driver compatability. I'm not going to worry about who's fault/blame whatever it is so long as my computer runs and runs well, know what I mean? Hiai Usobuki

Earlier Ati dx9 cards dont show this problem now..they all as far as i know run sl with hardware skinning and avatarcloth available... Maybe you should point more in that direction and then SL not able to work with it the way drivers are designed. From: Hiai Usobuki I'm not going to worry about who's fault/blame whatever it is so long as my computer runs and runs well, know what I mean? Hiai Usobuki No i dont know what you mean ... oh wait.. i get it..sorry.. When you have problems you find somone else to fixx it for you coz you have totaly no clue what a computer is all about?? is that it? ^^

Well I WAS looking forward to shopping for a nifty new laptop w/better graphics today- but now I'm confused about what to look for (not to mention Skeert!! That would suk to get home and surprise-no SL)
Maybe I will just settle for the cheaper intel chipset and forget about Nvidia OR ATI because at least I know it works.. no windlight but it works.
