I am on Orientation Island, but the box in the left-upper corner, which I assume is giving me some helpful instructions, is written in Japanese (or some asian language that I don't read!). I have no idea how this could have happened... I chose English throughout installation, and the application itself is in English (Preferences also specifies English). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the SecondLife app but it hasn't helped. Can someone please help me?! I'm pretty much stuck here.

OMG...hehehheh...sorry for laughing but about year ago when i started to play Sl...Sl put me german island...and yes i dont speak german at all...i know the feeling....
