Well, I've had this problem for about 2 months or something ridiculous now. Basically when I log into SL everything loads fine then a second loading bar appears saying "Downloading clothing" it gets to about 1/4 of the way across the loading bar then it dissapears and shows me the message: Your clothing will download in the background, you can still move around and people will see you correctly but you may not see everything correctly. I think that's what it says... I can't stomach seeing it again, I feel too angry Anyway, then it lets me move VERY VERY Laggily around a little bit, locks me into flying into one direction, through the scenery... after a while I return to where I became locked into the flying, then it crashes. How lame. Anyway, how can I fix this STUPID STUPID bug? Before I need councilling for insanity. Anyone? Please? It must be common.

I started having the same problem today. I went to Roma this morning and picked up some freebies, then logged out. Now when I log in again I get the login message you mentioned. Then I can use SL but my avatar is invisible.
At first the problem was a little worse. I was getting a series of "missing clothing" and "missing body part" popup messages. I deleted some things I got from Roma, and now I don't get the messages anymore. However, the avatar is still invisible.

Funny you mentioned this, I got the same message for the first time this morning. It said "your clothing is still downloading but people can see you normally" or something like that. Never had it before today. How much you want to bet that I am invisible to others LOL

Did you get any new objects the last time you were online?
I'm wondering if this was caused by something I did or if it's a newly created bug on Linden's part.

No I had nothing new. Have never had the message before. However, I clear my cache everytime I shut down SL...

Although it's nice to finally see a reply, I guess this problem just ain't so common. Maybe it is and no one who's fixed it is being very useful? I dunno.
But basically I didn't add anything new to my avatar either, you'd rightfully expect it to be linked to an overstocked cache or too many items due to the error message. However, I didn't buy anything new the session before this first occured and even if I had I can't get to my inventory to delete anything to test it.
I've re-installed SL and that hasn't fixed it, I even deleted every single file on my HDD linked to SL, just to be sure it was nothing to do with the cache 100%. As you may be able to tell, it'd didn't work and I got the same message after logging in again.
We should probably sort this out now though... there must be a solution to it, it seems so trivial.

I get this when there is either a high number of people logged into SL or my connection is way slow. One of the ways i fixed it was to reduce the amount of bandwidth (managed to log on with a dial up connection by reducing it to the lowest possible setting) in preferences. I did find however if there are high 15k to 16k of people in SL at any one point in time that if i just keep relogging eventually i show up. When it has happened before i have asked people if they see me and yes they can but to me im just any prims i was wearing ie hair and shoes, if im lucky my funky trench jacket bottom. I know its not that helpful but its a bug thats been around for a while =]

Thanks Aemilia but that solution hasn't fixed it for me.
How do you request the help of a Linden staff member or some kind of Admin / GM? They could fix it I'm sure.

Also many of the male Avs have turned female...

No avatar only hair, no L$ balance, no search function, no tp function, waited half hour nothing changed. Relogged a dozen times, no difference.
<sigh>

Been having this all day and so has nearly everyone else I know. It looks like it has something to do with the post-patch work the Lindens are doing today or perhaps yet another side affect from last night. From the amount of people i've met who were "Ruthed" it's doubtfull that it's anything we ourselves have done.

Looks like we can be looking forward to a fix once and for all then if everyone's getting it, Linden will have reason to remove it outright... Wait out the bad and the good will come. A tip from someone who's been dealing with this for about 9 weeks (moi): Find something other than Second life to do if you don't want brain hemoraeging from extreme frustration. Try this: >>> http://kittensaresocute.ytmnd.com/ <<< ((wub zakkipie))

I'm new today and this is how I started out.

My avatar never appears, or he's just hair. etc. Everything you complained about. Plus I somehow exited Help island unintentionally, so I am really just sunk. Pretty discouraging for a newbie.

I can't believe it's such a crushing issue and hasn't been fixed yet.
I've pretty much given up by now, checking in from month to month to see if they've even acknowledged the problem... how do you get in the GM's faces about these things? Make them take note a bit better.

I have had this invisible avatar problem many times, but it is not always like that. Now I have been withouth that problem for some time except a couple of times. Relogging has helped, I think, if the clothes have not loaded in reasonable time. I just do not understand why is it loading the clothes, because there is some cache in local computers, right? I adjusted my cache to maximum.

Zakkai Kaiser I actually discovered recently it as my bandwidth/computer causing this crash and not the Sl client. Once I changed my bandwidth and behavior and WHAM no more issue. Try this: First I assume you are not dual logging if so then these can still be followed but you might fail regardless. 1) REBOOT and run SL FIRST. Sometimes it's a memory/resource issue. Yes these aren't suppossed to happen anymore but they do. 2) DO NOT RUN ANYTHING ELSE. I'm serious. no IE, no nothing. Makesure all the items that start up when your PC does are done booting and doing thier thing before turning on SL. 3) Do not loose SL focus. Do not check yahoo IM, etc. Infact if you need to shut off such programs as they can change your focus to the IM screen. 4) Even if your screen seems locked up and your mouse can move then click on the button! Sometimes it is frozen as it works and then will hiccup past and you can easily help it speed along by giving it a nice click on that button ahead of time. TELL IT WHO'S BOSS! .. kinda ^_^

Well, I got a brand new laptop from Gateway when customer support was giving me the run around by writing (you know, on paper with ink) the president of the company. Also encluded printouts of all the e-mails (22 pages). Always go to the top.

--- edit: removed message, I got another broadcast in game saying central database problems. --
I advise anyone that thinks one of their clothes is causing a bug have some patience in this time, it may be a database error not clothing code error. I had issues with me being invisible but these problems seemed to be happening the most closer to the error broadcasts or downtimes.

I had this error too, and nothing i could do solved it for a while. It was very annoying, worse, because i had no idea what i was actually wearing, leading to a red-faced situation where people told me i was actually naked A suspicion i have is that its related to big skins, which take too long to download on slower connections if they have been lost from the client cache for some reason. The way i managed to fix it was by: 1. teleporting to a private place 2. switching on the client & server menu by pressing control+alt+D 3. going to "clothing..." in the Client menu and taking off everything you can, and wearing one of the standard basic skins 4. relogging That fixed it first time. I have no idea if its a proper fix, or whether its just luck it worked, but its something to try.

I have been dealing with this problem for a few months now =(
Recently my NVidia 7900 was fried, and I ordered a replacement card (Same card, it was under warrenty) Secondlife started working for about a week and a half.
Now the problem is back
(to clarify)
Sometimes get the clothing error and cant move, or see my avatar, and am sometimes at the bottom of the map
OR
Sometimes i can move for a second or two, then I fly into the abyss and cant stop moving (if I dont try to move then after the second or two, I cant move at all)

I have gotten the message so often over the past months I didn't think it was a bug, but just something that happened, perhaps if you have alot of items. However for the past few days I end up sinking into the ground when I sit on things, which is bizarre, and scary as I have a fear of open ocean water (I know I'm weird). Then today I could not change my outfit and was stuck. In a barely rezzed shirt and pants without being able to attatch anything or change the clothing.
My friend could also not get all of his av's attachments on (werewolf av so he looked a touch funny with a bicep and a paw missing). When I cleared cache, relogged I was complete mist. I could click on myself to detach anything and unclothe myself, but the appearance button was greyed out.
I then rebooted my computer, did a repair on my wireless connection, and restarted sl...still mist. Went to another sim to see if it was just a wonky bug in the area to no avail.
So after reading the above I am sure, as said, it is a linden side problem, and waiting it out will fix it. Although I think I will be cleaning my inventory out of some things tonight.
Thanks to all who gave out info. Glad it wasn't just me.
