I hear removing attachments reduces the effects of lag a bit, specifically when crossing sim borders.
I wish lag would go away. I would rather see "Buffering xx%" and have the client resume exactly where I started buffering, instead of jumping around or suddenly falling through the ground.

It depends on what you mean by "lag". What is your make and model of CPU, motherboard, RAM and video card? What is your connection type? Are you on a wireless network? Use Alt-1 to show your performance stats. (Click on the 'Basic' tab.)
FPS stands for "Frames Per Second" -- that's how many pictures are rendered per second. (The human eye sees at about 60fps. Depending on where you're from, your television is either 25 or 30fps.)
On my AMD Athlon 2.2Ghz (3200+), 1GB DDR400, GeForce FX5200, I get between 10 and 30fps, usually around 15. That's pretty good for SL. There are a lot of triangles to draw.
If you mean the actual response time between your computer and SL, look at "Ping User" and "Ping Sim". I have a very good connection, and I'm relatively close to San Francisco, where the SL servers are located. I get a ping between 60 and 100ms, on average.
Depending on your connection speed and capacity, (note that these are not in related in any way) you may find that your response time is too high to effectively navigate SL. If you have a satellite connection, for instance, your ping time can be as much as a few seconds.
If you just find the controls to be a little too loose and have difficulty moving around, then I recommend you use an auto-anchoring anti-push script like the one I sell at my store in Chartreuse. Seriously, that's the main reason I wrote it in the first place. SL's controls suck, and it makes them suck a great deal less.

Well, I'm pretty sure this other person wasn't me, so I don't trust their judgement. Do you know what make and model of CPU, motherboard, RAM and video card you're using now? A better video card costs as much as you're willing to spend. Depending on how old your current one is, it could be anywhere from $50 US to $1000 US, with most on the lower end of that scale. I would recommend the GeForce FX5600 (128MB) for around $100 US, but it's entirely possible that you already have a better card. If you don't remember what card you have, you should try to look through the reciepts if you still have them. That way, you can know where your starting position is.
