I'm putting this here because everything outside of general and off topic is ignored by the majority.

1) Geforce 4 MX users: Does your computer randomly restart itself while playng SL

2) Lindens: Is this a know problem?

I have an FX 5500 (is that GF4?)

SL will occassionally hang/stall even if the stats read okay and the CPU reads low.

No, it's GF5

And the MX cards were always dodgy.

Hi Adohan

First of all, be prepared to hear that this is a crappy video card. Which is true, it's pretty low-end, but I have run SL on this video card for the last year without this particular issue.
I have had a couple of other issues with it, mostly just obvious appearance issues such as my Av not showing up, just my attachments. Also textures going all wacky on me. I've had to re-install older drivers to fix those issues.
I'm sorry I can't offer any useful help with your troubles, but hopefully some more knowledgeable folks will be along soon :)

Yes, when practicing safe sex in SL remember to throw away your genitals after every use and swab the area with a prim :p

I have one of these and don't experience your problem.

I'd guess that your crashing is caused by another problem - which shows up in a high stress environment such as SL.

I'd make sure you are running up to date drivers for everything, and check your memory.

It's worth noting that (unless yours is unusual) GeForce 4MX cards are passively cooled, i.e. a heatsink, but no fan. SL does run the card very hard and can cause overheating. If this happens, the effects cannot even be guessed at.

My suggestion, when it happens, open the pc and see how hot it is. Careful, you might get burned. If it's that hot, you need better cooling, or an active cooling system for the card. Fans for Nvidia GPUs are available, since they do tend to break down...

I have a passive card now, but I do have 5 other fans in the pc.

The MX4 cards were generally derided when they were new because they were not based on the GF4 core, but were actually modified GF2 cores. The GF2 will run SL, but its about as low as you can go.

If your computer actually RESTARTS, that's bad. Second Life doesn't really do that in and of itself. It usually hints that there are major graphics driver issues, power issues within the computer, or a bad case of overheating.
