Okay so I downloaded second life because my friend wanted me to try it out.
But when I play everything flashes and all I see is a hipos but.

You see a "hipos butt".........as in a hippopotamus? Well, I think one of two things are going on. 1. You are joking with us. 2. You downloaded and installed a bogus copy of Second Life from somewhere other than SL's official website. If you are not joking you might consider (very seriously) about running a complete virus scan. If it were me I'd run more than one.........the one I have installed and constantly running on my computer and a couple free scans from places like McAfee or Norton.

Peggy, you may want to consider doing a little research before throwing out the panic answer.

A third possibility you didn't consider that also applies: They're using the open source Hippo OpenSim Viewer, which works differently from the SL viewer. In which case, they need to go talk to that other group instead of this one about that viewer, support for the Hippo viewer can be found at http://opensim-viewer.sourceforge.net/support.php

Why would I have to consider "researching" something someone said in this forum about downloading SL (that impression was recieved from the very first sentence of the opening post)? There was no mention of using the open source viewer (Hippo)........it is natural that a person would think the OP was talking about an SL viewer. That is what I did........and only someone who uses Hippo as a viewer for SL would think otherwise. I know you are a huge Linux fan and an equally huge proponent of open source software. But, you must know you are in a very small minority in this forum. I think open source when I use GIMP (which I love) or when I visit another virtual world that is open source ( I use the Hippo viewer for that world by the way). But I don't think open source when someone comes to this forum with a problem with SL and states they downloaded it.....I think of the official viewer supplied by Linden Lab.

So, please stop "correcting" me at every opportunity. I'm sorry I don't love your Linux as you think I should......I'll stick it out with Windows, thanks. You could have made your comment to the OP without the opening argument directed at me.

Yeah, I know the Hippo viewer works differently than the SL viewer........I use it. But only with the open source virtual world that I joined. Not for SL.

lolwut?

#1 - Peggy is not a paperdoll who panics.

#2 - WTF is a Hippo viewer and WHY would anyone to research all the possible viewer choices this person just may be using to connect to SL before formulating an opinion to their problem?

So i guess before posing a suggestion to a technical problem one should open up 5 or 6 tabs in Firefox, and research for a day or few until they have discovered and eliminated all the other possibilities...

I never heard of a Hippo viewer.

*flushes the knowledge that a Hippo viewer exists because i know for sure that if i have the knowledge to answer a persons techy SL problem, i will not be asking them if they are running the standard client or the Hippo*

Because the original poster explicitly mentioned seeing hippos, which happens to be the mascot of OpenSimulator and related projects.

Surprise: That's open source, too.

Try providing accurate information and people won't correct you.

And if he had said he saw a Penguin's butt I suppose I was supposed to immediately think of Linux too. :)

I'm well aware that SL released the viewer code to open source.......quite some time ago in fact. But, someone (brand new to Second Life) who posts here in this forum with problems with a viewer is almost always referring to the SL viewer available on SL's website. Not some third party, opensource viewer........most don't even know there are other viewers available except the ones supplied by LL.

I made a friggin' mistake because my immediate thought was not that a new member posting he/she had problems logging in was using some viewer other than one of Linden Lab's viewers. It was is not necessarily inaccurate information, by the way.........you see the OP has not chimed in stating he/she is using the Hippo viewer. So, my information is just as accurate at yours. You're making a pretty big assumption there.......and spouting off about something you really have no facts to base it on.

You need to get over that BS attitude of yours. But, typical of the stereotypical Linux freak you just can't do it, can you? Why is it that a small percentage of Linux users feel it's necessary to taut their "knowledge" about Windows and all it's flaws.........put down Windows users at every opportunity? Go to the Linux forum (there is one on this site, or didn't you see it?) and spout all that "knowledge" to the people who will appreciate it. There is, at least, one frequent poster in this forum that is also a Linux user and I've yet to hear him put a single Windows user down. Why don't you follow his lead and show real intelligence..........oh, I forgot you think all Windows users are stupid. How stupid of me.

personal attacks that will probably get deleted

You're way off base there, I use Vista as well. And remember what your mother said: If you can't say something nice, don't say it at all.

Because it's the viewer OpenSimulator's putting out, and it's a problem that's likely to come up again. The OpenSimulator community isn't exactly that far removed from the SL community and has a lot of the same people involved, so for someone to wind up here asking about Hippo isn't /that/ unexpected.

Or just type "hippo viewer" into google... no reason to make Google sound like voodoo magic now. If you can find it with a pretty vague Google search in 10 results or less, it's not exactly obscure.

An effective way to respond to the vague and somewhat off the wall problem described in the initial post would have been:

What are your system specs, including the exact version of Second Life you are using?

Can you provide screen shots of the flashing and the hippo butt?

Perhaps LL should replace the tired old image at the top of the forum screen with a big bold "Include your system specs and exact version of Second Life when asking for technical advice."
