PCI Mode and AGP problems..

Upon entering Second Life I get the following message:

Gl indicates that the graphic driver on this system is
running in PCI mode, a slower method of drawing
graphics. If you're using a PCI video card, you can ignore
this message. If you are using an AGP video card, you
should update your motherboards drivers for improved
performance in this and other 3D applications.

My machine specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.0 mghz
512 mb of Kingston pc 2700 ram
MSI K7N2G-L motherboard 8x AGP compatable
GeForce FX 5700 LE 256mb ddr 8x AGP

At first I thought this was a problem with my former video card since it was rather old, so I got a new one (listed above). But after installing the new card and installing the latest drivers I still got the same message. So I then updated my motherboard drivers to the latest version available and then flashed the bios to the latest version. Still no dice... I contacted the maker of my motherboard and told them what was happening and they told me to make sure that SL was compatible with service pack 2 for windows XP/ which was no help, and so now I am here at the mercy of anybody that might have a clue as to what I can do to fix this.

Any information concerning this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advace, Asiago Macdonald.

I had the same problem after installing a new video card in my system. I got the message about being in PCI mode. I ended up updating the driver files for the motherboard. Seemed my motherboard was not using the AGP slot the correct way and defaulting to an older method of addressing it. Since I updated the motherboard chip drivers I no longer get that message and have noticed that graphic applications (especially Second Life) run much better.

Hope that helps. At least it might be one possible solution to your problem.

Update:

Upon searching for the answer on SL's website I found that this is sort of a known issue with the lindens and they even have a link on their drivers page https://secondlife.com/download/utilities.php
that has 2 links to other websites that has drivers to fix my problem.....however none of them are specifically listed for my motherboard...so im still stuck :(

You should be looking at www.nvidia.com for your drivers. Both your motherboard and video card use nvidia chipsets.

Specifically you want both of the following:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_61.77
and
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10

Kelly

@Kelly Linden, thanks for your responce.

I currently am running the display driver version 61.77, and am not sure about the nforce driver so I am currently downloading it and will try that out...

UPDATE: after installing the 5.10 nforce driver it took exactly 17 minutes for windows to load and caused MAJOR problems with my computers performance. I did get sl to run and I didnt recieve the message but something was serously wrong so I tried to system restore but it failed 2 times. I ended up manually uninstalling the drivers and now im back to normal.

I guess my computer hates me or sl or both :(

go into system cpl and make sure your harddrives are accessing in udma mode rather than pio. occasionally installing mb drivers specially on via chipsets will cause them to revert to pio mode. That would cause the performance issues.
