Cartoonish textures in Windlight?

Hey,
I'm having issues with the new WindLight viewer. Whenever I check off Atmospheric Shading, all the colors and textures get really screwed up and cartoonish. I was able to run the last Windlight release just fine, and from what I have read, I meet all the requirements to run it..anyone know what is going on and how to fix this?

Yes, I see the same thing, specially with avatars, like you switch your pc from 32 bit color back ro the old 256 colors from the old dos game days. And I know I meet the requirements easily.

Firstly, you said ALL the textures and colors...I only see the sky changing...that's a huge difference when trying to support your problem...

Anyway...

Triple-check that all you settings are proper, and are set the way you want. Make sure your graphical drivers are all current. Make sure your videocard supports this shader version (I know I know...but just check).

It's dropping the bits on your sky color-wheel...not sure why. Sorry.

I have this same exact issue, I have all updated drivers, all my graphics are set the way they need to be, my graphics card supports everything that LL says it should in order to run Windlight, yet I still get this issue.

Same problem with my Gygabyte Radeon 9600 pro.
In SL the group "First look" might be helpfull.
Looks like a software bug that is limiting compartibility though.

this thread needs more info on what shader version is used.
best with a wikipedia link and a list to what cards support that shader version.

Hello everyone - I was fiddling with my Catalyst Control Center to set some stuff sharper for the Windlight client. I had the exact same issue when I had 'Catalyst A.I.' set to advanced. Upon setting it back to standard I fixed the colour issue. Might want to check that out! :)

Okay... this is what I have...
[ ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600 ]

That is one of the cards that LL has lowered support for in the new version of Windlight. They have lowered the "class" of the card (I don't know exactly what the "class" means or implies) and lots of others. This may be part of the reason (it may not be too).
The 'Catalyst A.I.' mentioned above also sounds like it could be the reason, esp if it is recent. I have problems in general with drivers based on anything above Catalyst 7.4.

I made a quick list of the cards that I noticed that they had downgraded in my post about LL dropping shader support *completely* for my card, which meant that Windlight looked worse than the main client. (Until I tweaked the Windlight files to add support back in, and Windlight even on Ultra works well for me now).

I just posted the following on the Jira about this
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3111

From: someone
ATI's Catalyst AI has some problems with some specific edge case coding. There are some work-arounds that the end user can do, but they can cause other problems, esp. in other programs. The only real fix is to find the code in Windlight that is triggering this edge case and fix it.

Work around #1: Turn AI off. (This does not seem to always work, and not everyone *can* turn it off)
Work around #2: Turn the Open GL texture preference to "High Quality" (or the highest setting that you have, above Quality). A side effect of this is that you will probably get lower framerates in *all* 3D applications and games :-(

REPO: (On a working system, well after I actually tweaked Windlight to work, see VWR-3272 to see what I have changed and why I needed to).

- Use Windlight in a working state, then exit.
- Go into the Graphic's card control panel, and under Open GL (or in the CCC I think they are all in the same place), find the "Texture Preference" and turn it down a couple of levels. I turned mine down from "High Quality" (the max), down one to "Quality"
- Start Windlight again, and confirm that you have the problem, if not, try a lower setting for "Texture Preference" (I expect that higher end cards might need this turned down further to get the banding effect).
- Exit Windlight and repeat the "Texture Preference" change, but this time turn it back up to what it was.
- Restart Windlight and confirm that things are back to normal.

Thank you! This fixed my problem perfectly, I am so happy. I loved Windlight but that damn cartoon texture was horribly disappointing. Thank you again.

I have the banded sky now.

A blast from the past. A blast of badness.

Hmm, it's in Cool Viewer, but not in Second Life 1.22.11 (113941) Mar 6 2009
