Every time I open Second Life Release Candidate viewer, after the "loading secondlife... detecting hardware, clearing cache... initializing, and so on.." there is supposed to be a launcher that will appear right away, right? but it doesn't show up... So how can I log in my name and pw if the launcher's not appearing? I've also tried the other viewers such as snowglobe, kirsten lee, and emerald viewer, still the same problem... The launcher won't appear. Please help me...

I have done all that I can figure to be the problem here and I still cant get the log in page to appear ....
when I click on the SL icon to start the program .. it says that it is checking the hardware and then clearing the cache and then ... NOTHING ...
it just stops all together ..... and then it says
"It appears that SL has crashed in a previous session do you want to send report" ... yes or no ... I click yes ... and it tells me that it is unable to log the report and shuts down , I click no and it just goes away ... but
SL does not ever start up..... I have uninstalled , reinstalled , I have restarted my computer ....
the only thing that I have done different since this happening is I put a clean OS on my computer ... the same as what I was using before and had no problems with my SL starting up.....
CAN ANYONE HELP ??? please ... thanks Alex

It doesn't get much more major than that. Installing or reinstalling an operating system is not like doing a disk clean-up or reverting to a previous state. Especially since you said it was a clean install which implies, at least, a format before installing the OS. You're starting over with basically a brand new computer......minus all the pre-installed software, configuration, and anything else the computer manufacturer installed or configured for you. A clean installation seldom winds up the same as it was even when you first got the computer (unless you built the machine yourself and did all your own configuring and tweaking).

First thing you need to do aftar any reinstallation of an OS is get all the updates for the operating system. Then get all the drivers for all devices installed in the computer (if you did not check each and every driver, and make note of the version, then chances are slim to none that you will get the same ones when you update them). However, most of your problems are probably related to your graphics dirvers. That's just a guess..........you (and everyone else so far in this thread) have neglected to give much to go on for any other suggestions.

Information about your computer is the best way to get help on anything relating to your issues running SL. Without it you'll only get generic suggestions that are likely not to help at all.........and mostly wastes time.

would reformatting be helpful? i guess it's a waste of time if it would be still the same problem... maybe my Firewall or anti-virus firewall must be configured... i just need further steps on how to fix it so the launcher will appear... ive been resolving this for weeks... still couldn't get it...

System information would be useful.

Make and model of computer, if applicable. If it's a homebrew, say so, and give the motherboard model.
Type of processor
Amount of ram
What video card?
What video driver?
Amount of video ram.
Operating system and "service pack level"
Legal operating system or bootleg?
What kind of internet service?
Model of router, modem, etc.
If you are on a network, is it wired or wireless?
Are you in a college dorm?

What kind of anti-virus and other anti-malware do you use?

Have you checked the Second Life log files? (don't paste the whole thing here, people don't like that)

Have you checked your operating system's event log?

You say the login page doesn't show up. Does anything at all happen? Are you left with a white window or nothing or what?

If it's windows, is the windows firewall turned on?

Formating and doing a clean install is not something to do right off the bat for a problem with one program. There is no indication (at this point) that there is anything wrong with your operating system. That would very likely not fix your problem........in fact it could introduce more than you bargained for simply because you will have to find and install all the drivers necessary for your system to operate properly.

Your discription of your problem is a little vague but it appears that SL is crashing before it completely loads. That is commonly caused by a few things. Drivers, antivirus programs, firewall programs, routers misconfigured just to name the most obvious. No one here can offer much in the way of help without some system specs as Suezanne requested. Without information we simply don't know...........and cannot help.

I been having login issues for past couple of days, i.e cant login from UK
Get as far as the connecting to region message then just stalls.
Message says check my internet!!

My Internet is fine 10meg down/1meg up,
the fact I connect to the LL Login server okay and am authorised makes me think its a problem on LL's end.

Done all the usual, cleared cache, tried different Alt accounts, tried logging into different regions, tried different viewers all to no avail.

Not panicking yet and doing the full reinstall as suspect that LL still having issues:

Always worth having a look at grid status before you rip your system apart!

If my understanding of ATI history is accurate, the Radeon 9600 hasn't been current since 2003. It's highly unlikely that any program as resource intensive as SL would run on a video card that old.

While the 9600 is slightly above the listed minimum spec for SL, the truth is those specs haven't been updated in quite some time. There's a small possibility that you MIGHT be able to get it to work if you disable all advanced graphics features disabled, and crank all settings down to absolute bare minimum. But there's a much better chance that it just won't work at all.

Trying to run SL on a 7-year-old graphics card is like trying to drive a horse & buggy on the highway. There's a slim possibility you could get to your destination that way, but it's more likely you won't be able to get any further than the end of the on-ramp before it becomes clear to you why highways are built for cars, with actual engines in them, not for horses & buggies that can't keep up.

Most likely, the reason the viewer is disappearing on you is simply because your video card is incapable of rendering it. The program either hangs in the background, or just silently crashes to the desktop.

It's 2010. Time to invest in a modern computer.

It's not the size; it's how you use it. :)

The size of the files is not particularly relevant in this context. It's the actual functions the software is calling on the hardware to perform that is most pertinent. SL does a lot of things that no video game has to do. It requires a lot of horsepower to run.

If you do decide to replace your computer with something more modern, but you're not sure what to pick out because you feel your knowledge of hardware specs is limited, tell us what your budget is, and we can make some recommendations. People ask about that kind of thing here all the time, and there are always lots of helpful folks willing to offer advice. :)
