I moved my post to its own thread cause i don't think anyone was looking at it :P

-------

Since Friday night(May 9th) after Taber went down, when i logged back in i was invisable, and still am. I can't double click on any clothes/body in my inventory, and i can't see any pictures when i go into appearance. Others can see me, but besides the outfit i'm wearing, my hair/body looks different

Any ideas how to fix?

I've tried upgrading and downgrading my graphic card drivers (as i have geforce 2), tried uninstalling then reinstalling then rebooting, and nothing worked.

Help! :)

PS: Also i just logged in and noticed that when i went to edit a script.....the script works fine, but in the actual text of the script, its all gone, cept for the first line that has a bunch of jumbled letters on it.

Is it possible my character file(or however we are saved on the SL server) was damaged?

Help pwease! :P

If other people can see you, then your appearance is probably intact somewhere, but just in case try to editing your appearance and changing some of your shape and texture sliders (even though you can't see yourself), and saving the changes. That should rebuild your appearance information.

The script thing sounds like cache file corruption to me, but if all the textures in the world look right then it may be something else. Complete un-install, then fresh installation is the best way to try to fix this.

Okies *deep breaths* :P I tried that, and indeed it made me appear, so yay for that part. When i entered appearance mode i made all new outfits, which made me appear. I still couldn't access any of the clothing files i had, however i was able to make a new 'outfit', but when i tried to exit the appearance window, i got the 'newview' error window popping up, causing me to crash. So in again i went and once again i was invisable, and tried again, went into appearance mode, the outfit was saved, but the body/hair/skin etc was not, it had reverted back to the one you begin with when you enter SL for the first time.

So basically i'm still invis when i log in, i appear as the original SL AV when i go into appearance mode, and i crash out with the newview error dos window menu when i try and close appearance.

I've reinstalled about 5 times today, including downloading the client a few times, rebooting a few hundred times.

This is annoying to say the least, but its beta so its ok i have patience hehe :)

Any more ideas i could try? :)

To update, i'm continueing to have problems. I'm still invisable when i log on. I appear when i go into appearance mode, though i'm still unable to access any of the clothing/body/hair folders. The items are there, i just can't double click on them to put them on. I can put on attachments fine.

When i try to exit appearance mode, after saving changes, i crash, causing the newview window to pop up.

Hmmm what else....all my scripts are still blank. Things were perfect until friday night, when Taber crashed. After i logged back, things were the way i described :)

Things i've done:

Rebooted
Uninstalled SL, rebooted, installed again
Updated graphic drivers (geforce2)
Downgraded graphic drivers (geforce2)
Installed new version today

I'm outta ideas on how to fix this
*pout*

Since you're not online right now, I'm going to try logging in using your account. Hopefully, I'll be able to debug the problem quickly.

I took a look around and here's what I found:

1. You had a corrupted pair of eyes (no moral judgement implied). I created a new one (via the right-click menu on an inventory folder) and then selected "wear on avatar," and your avatar re-appeared. (General rule: you must have all your body parts--shape, skin, eyes, and hair--to be visible.)

2. Looking at your recent crash reports, I see you're running Windows 98 SE. Ouch! That's not a supported operating system.

3. Also from your recent crash reports, it looks like Second Life has been failng to write to your hard drive in a lot of places. That's why you haven't been able to file bug reports or (it appears) upload textures recently. I can't say for certain, but this is probably the result of recent changes in SL that don't live so happily with Windows 98.

What to do?
I strongly suggest upgrading to XP (or 2000 or NT). If you really, really can't do that, you can try upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer--which may upgrade some of the system files that we use (Shell32.dll, for example).

We are working to make Second Life more robust--and any avatar invisibility means that we have more work to do. However, because we don't support Windows 98, we simply don't test on that platform.

Hope this helps!

Another idea just occured to me: is it possible that your disk is nearly full?

Yep my disk is almost full, i have maybe a gig free at the moment.

I wish i could upgrade to xp, but its just too expensive right now for me hehe. If it is a problem with windows 98, then i guess i'll just have to live with it *pouts more* lol

Thankyou for all your help up to this point though :)

Update!

When i logged in last night i was invisable to start off with, but appeared a lil bit later (as the generic av). I can build things fine, just can't use any clothing/body parts and things.

I wanted to see if it was just my computer, so i installed SL on another we have in the house, and she has Windows XP (but i can't play on it..*grumble* hehe), and things were the same in game. Invisable to start, turned visable after a lil bit, but no use of clothing/body parts. Oh and scripts were still blank.

It looks like Ian's intuition was correct. According to the Secondlife.log file that Aurelie sent me, her cache files were corrupted.

Normally, an uninstall would clear out those files, but since she's running on Windows 98 (which we don't support), the uninstaller didn't find them, and so they needed to be removed by hand.

According to Aurelie's email just now, deleting her C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\SecondLife\cache directory did the trick.

In the mean time, we're beefing up our detection and handling of corrupted cache files. Flakey hard drives abound, and the real bug is that we weren't recovering properly.

Thanks, Aurelie, for your help in tracking this one down!
