Hi :)

I've got this prob in both normal SL and Windlight and I'm wondering if it's my graph card or a bug in SL ?

Every time I try to zoom in to an object or even look around myself when editing items my cam doesn't move properly and then shoots out across to the next parcel etc.. also If I do manage to get too close to an item using ctrl 9 and the ctrl ALT etc the screen flashes/flickers sometimes. I'ts becoming a real pain as I can't build :( .. Is it me or a bug ? The rest of SL is fine and graphics seem ok.. even in W LIght.. its just when I try to do this.

By the way my card is ATI X800GT and runs perfectly fine otherwide

Thanks

Have you disabled camera contraints in the client menu?

I've noticed that focusing on a mega-prim sometimes wonks out my camera, because it's not sure where the center of the object is... same with focusing on my avatar. Try focusing on an attachment that you're wearing; this should allow you to zoom in very close, and even through the avatar mesh.

if this is only happening in the one area i'd say you have a mega prim problem, real pain in the butt. if it is that, try turning the mega prim around on anotehr angle, sometimes that helps

Hi.. thanks for the replies :)

No, it happens everywhere :( .. If i want to pan the camera around myself to see the front it goes weird...or goes sideways and not around lol I can't zoom in on anything unless I use ctrl 0 .. then if I try to move around an item it zaps me out.. It has got me stumped :S

I have disabled cam restraints as I can be a nosey ole devil and like to cam about ;) .. but can't do that anymore *sigh*

I have uninstalled SL completely and re installed both SL's to no avail.. I have an older verision of SL and might give that a go just to see if its the same... I know lots of peeps are having major probs of late since they have changed servers, so this may just be a another glitch ?

I have been having this problem with any version of the ATI video drivers above 7.10. I get really strange camera movements just as you describe. Downgrading the drivers to 7.10 corrects the issue. I would suggest trying that.

Just for kicks, try using a different mouse, or replacing the batteries if it's wireless.

Last time my wireless mouse ran low, it didn't just quit working like usual; it started acting weird and was messing up my cam and building. I changed the batteries and it was fine.

You're welcome. :) Now if I could only figure out a way to JIRA this issue so that LL would understand. :\ There are several issues open regarding camera movement, but they all seem to center around the viewer, and don't take video card into consideration. I think LL is barking up the wrong tree.

i see this issue with Nvidia graphic cards as well (8800GT).
updating/rolling back the drivers or changing setting did not resolve the problem.
holding the ALT and moving the cursor where i want and while holding ALT, left clicking then letting ALT go works for me.

Elite, is that with the 8800GT or 8800GTS or 8800GTX?

Thanks, I'm about to buy ... and tho the GT is a great value, the GTX is SO much more widely used I've been thinking of just biting the bullet and getting it. THe memory bandwidth on the GTX is also just hypnotically appealing ...

It's not just limited to the 8800's I have this "quirk" and I'm on a FX2500M. It seems to have more to do with the versions of the drivers, then the make/model of video card.

It's not your graphics driver. If it stopped happening after a driver downgrade it's likely a coincidence. This is a very old problem and you'll likely encounter it again.

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-98

Some people seem to think it has to do with hollow prims, but I've seen it on non-hollow prims, too. And huge prims have their own camera issues. The scale of camera movement seems to be based in part on the inverse size of the prim you're focused on, so if you have wildly varying prim sizes the movement of your camera will change noticeably depending on which prim you're focused on.

I beg to differ Anya. It is definitely video driver related. I have changed back and forth between the 7.10 drivers and the 8.x drivers several times, and the camera issue consistently appears/disappears based on which driver is installed, across all version of the viewer (RC, Windlight, Normal). Maybe there is a similar issue, but there is no doubt of the fact that a similar if not the same issue is Video Driver related.

Hi there,

Im facing the same problem as Mully.. and it drives me nuts.
I can no longer use cameraview as it spins wildly.. always..
I hope that changing to another driver will do the trick for me as well.
Do have an additional question though. Im a total nitwit when it comes to stuff like that. So uhm.. can anyone tell me where to find that 7.1 driver
Thankies, Liz

It's a little convoluted, as I don't know what card you have. you would first have to go to:

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Then navigate through that based on your operating system and video card. Once you get to the page for your card (like this one for my card):

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp

Down near the bottom is a link that says "Previous Drivers and Software"

click on that and you would want to get version 7.10.

:)

Your cam can do this if you try to ALT+cam on the "wrong" side of a megaprim. But if it happens ALL the time, this is probably not your issue...

03-28-2008 11:15
forgot to add this...

Up till about two weeks ago i had no trouble with my cam view whatsoever.. then just one day while i was on sl.. after about one hour it was messed up.. just like that...
So taking that into perspective.. i am wondering whether it is actually the driver...

If you didn't change the version of your viewer, or anything else about the computer, Then no, probably not the driver. There was a thread once about clearing out your SL settings to fix such a bug, but I wouldn't know where to find it.

Also, your card listed in your specs is *not* an ATI, it's an Nvidia :) My instructions are meaningless.

Well I'm going to toss in my 2L here w/ camera viewer problems I encountered w/ the latest RC and regular client.

When I build I take a square prim and lay it on the ground and stretch it until it's big enough and color it black. Then I build tiny prims on top of that. Well normally I use Nicholaz's version b/c of a stuttering client issue I had many months ago. Each new update never fixes it so I stopped bothering until I was told it was fixed.

Anywho, I discovered I couldn't cam properly to the small prims on box on the ground. My husband was in the next room and I asked him to come in and look at it as a) he's very familiar w/ client development and b) he can usually figure out what the deal is.

Turns out that the camera was messing up b/c the prims were so close to the ground. When I raised all the prims up in the air a bit (about a meter) the whole thing went away and I could cam fine.

Maybe this will help someone, maybe not. But I thought I would toss it out there. I'm back to Nicholaz for now b/c of that camera issue.

Ok.. problem for me has FINALLY been solved... This worked for me:

It's important to clear out temporary Second Life files (such as the cache) when reinstalling. Here's the process:

Open c:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\Local Settings and delete the contents of your Temp folder.
Open c:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\Application Data\Second Life and delete the contents of the Cache folder.
Uninstall Second Life using the Add/Remove Programs tool in your Windows Control Panel.
Visit http://secondlife.com/download and download and install the latest release.

If you cannot see the files or folders:
Select Tools > Options in Windows Explorer.
Click the View tab.
Select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Click OK.

Hope this will be useful to others as well.
