Hi, there.
Well, I made an account, downloaded SL, and was ready to go when I ran into a little problem. First time I tried to run it the client closed as soon as it began to precache after connecting to the world or whathaveyou. I tried it again, and the same thing happened. I fiddled with the bandwidth and cache options under preferences, but can't seem to get it to work.
I'm running on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, Intel Pentium 4, 1.6 GHz with 256 MB RAM (going to install another 256 MB some time this week).
When I started the client back up it asked whether I'd like to report the crash, so I did that, but is there anything anyone can suggest in the mean time? It'd be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Ok, now when I try it I receive an error which reads "The instruction at 0x77f52cd0" referenced memory at "0xff3c5f56". The memory could not be "written". I can't think of any reason why the program should have any problems writing to that section of memory.

I've been getting those like crazy since 1.5 was released. I'm currently surfin the Forums to see if there are any new problems since the fix early this morning. Hopefully they've been fixed!

Rotten,
The problem isn't your RAM, though it never hurts to install more. It is with your video card. SL does not support all video cards (as I found out - VIA/S3G video card). I just installed a brand new video card (Nvidia GeForce ) last night and I am finally rid of those pre-cache crashes and other crashes due to the video card.
The US$100 investment is well worth it!

The US$100 investment is well worth it! Thanks for the reply, Alexander! I don't think it's my video card (ATI Radeon 9600XT with Omega drivers), tho. I didn't get those messages before SL v1.5 and I do already have 1GB of RAM. I got suspiscious of my RAM last night after crashing for the 5th time. After all, why would you get an error about memory not being able to be "read" (at various addresses). So, I opened my case and swapped my (2) 512MB boards. I went back in for about an hour with no problem, but that's not enough time to fully test my theory. I'll keep ya posted on the results...

Rotten, I couldn't believe it either when I was informed by the Lindens that my pre-cache crashes were due to my video card. I do know that there have been lots of issues with ATI Radeon cards and here is a link to the forum by Doug Linden regarding it. /invalid_link.htmlI hope this helps.
