I found out that my initial problem was that I did not have Quicktime installed. So, I installed the latest version and made sure that my video settings in SL were on. Now, when I go to where a movie is showing, I don't get the blank white screen (on the Galaxy cruise ship) but it is instead, black. If no one has any ideas, I might try to call SL support and see if they can help me. Quicktime plays movies fine by itself on the internet and I don't have any problems with streaming audio on SL. The movies don't appear to be working though
Any tips? I am running Windows Vista, 32 bit, Nvidia 8800GTS video card, 2 gig of RAM, tons of hard drive space, latest version of Quicktime and all available Windows updates.

Do you have the texture of your tv-screen set in the media land info as well? You must have the same texture on the prim you would like to see the video on and in the landinfo media part.

This particular one is a movie theater on board a cruise ship. However, streaming video doesn't work for me anywhere.
This isn't something I'm building or setting up. This is me trying to view streaming video from within my game client that someone else has built.

Did you say you have activated the video feature in your prefs?

try another video to test it, if you don't render your video file to buffer automatically it can take a while to load in before it starts

I believe I do have it to start automatically. I'll see if I can find other movie theaters and see if it works there. I'm going to bet it doesn't. When I installed SL, I didn't have Quicktime installed. I installed it after the fact. Is it possible I have to uninstall SL and reinstall? If that's the case, are there certain folders I need to backup first?

Assuming that the prim texture face turns black, and you have installed QuickTime successfully, then it means that the media is connecting to the url. If you do not see any media, consider the following:
1) Can you see the media over the internet when not using SL? Solutions if YES: a) Your connection speed isn't sufficient to have SL, Media and probably voice running at the sametime. SL uses 50kbps-1.5mbps connection, media between 500kbps-1.5mbps, voice between 1.0mbps-2mbps. b) Your firewall maybe blocking the ports used by QuickTime Pluggin. c) You may not have the latest version, and SL will block any older versions.
Possible solutions: a) Get more bandwidth. b) Turn down the bandwidth in network tab of the client to 300 or less when watching media, this will throttle the clients connection allowing for bandwidth for the media stream. c) Turn off voice to save bandwidth. d) Open QuickTime player, go to preferences, set the slider to a larger cache, rather than instant on. Make sure your connection is the right one selected and not automatic. e) If you are using windows, open the firewall icon in Control Panel, go to exceptions tab, unselect everything except SecondLife and SLVoice. If you also use a router, check the ports that are openned for SecondLife (although it should not need port openning, make sure its not being blocked).
It maybe that the media, although QuickTime compatible, is using a non default codec. The SL client pluggin cannot select those formats, you must do it manually in preferences within the QuickTime Player. Once altered, restart your system.
If you are using Vista, you must install QT as administrator (right hand click the installer programme, and click 'run as administrator'). With all Windows systems, make sure you are in the Administrator account for installing programmes. Other accounts may not have permissions to install certain programmes.
If the Texture Prim face is white, you are not connecting to any media.
BTW, LL phish all media urls now, to prevent 'undesireable' media being watched, that causes a delay in media starting.
