There was a thread somewhere about this recently but I couldnt find it. I apologize for the new thread.
When running SL for a long period of time (such as the attempt to stay on overnight) my old issue was will the server go down or will I be logged by an administrator. These things I accept can and will occur. My new issue is this error Im getting.
My computer gives me an error:
"Smart Heap Library (bearing the SL logo) Out of memory please free up some memory and retry."
When I pull up my task manager SL is running with less Mem Usage than when Ive been active on it awhile (2,880K at the moment). My CPU usage with SL, error, task mgr and 2 instances of Netscape open as I write this is 13%. I am able to open and use all other programs but SL stays locked up and I can't seem to recover from the error even if I now close everything except SL and "retry". "Ignore" makes the same error appear and of course "Abort" closes SL.
This appears in my case at least to be a new issues with the current ver 0.4.3
I have a P4 2.53Ghz, XP w/512ram.

Hmm, I do have memory problems as well when I've been running SL for long periods of time, but I don't get that error message as you do. The funny thing is, my CPU is running at 65-70%, (600-700 mb peak usage) which is extremely high, but I am still able to flip and out of SL, get on the web, and even run PS7....it does bog down a bit, but this baby manages to hold its own...lol.
What kind of graphics card do you have?...my Radion 9000 pro does have a tendency to hang on occasion when I'm in a situation with a lot of other agents, such as the party of last night...my fps will drop to below 1.0, and I can hardly even use the chat. Sometimes it'll "let go", other times I have no choice to log out and back in. What I don't understand is that you're only running 13% on the CPU even with all that going on. My feeling is that the SL client gets corrupted after about a week's usage..so I've gotten into the habit of putting on a clean install when I feel it's getting too buggy. Hopefully the next update will clear this up...
J
PS..I'm running a P4, 2.4 processor, 512 RAM and 128 mb vid card w/ Win XP Pro, sp 1.

I've had the same sort of thing happen -- maybe 3 times -- but they were all 3 releases ago, and didn't occur in any releases before or after that one. One of those times my SL froze but I could use other programs. The other 2 times nothing froze but I rebooted anyway so I wouldn't have any problems.
Alienware Area51 (Cyborg Green hehe) P4 @ 2.53GHz 512MB RDRAM Win XP Home Ed AGP GeForce4 Ti4600 w/128MB DirectX 9 IE 6 (I always have at least 2 instances open)

Max resources

I think you are having the same problem I did from a previous post. Is you processor peaked at 100 percent when you go to task manager ? I have a feeling since I have 1Gig of ram I don't get the out of memory error - however - when my computer enters this state it is using 756 Meg of ram.
This happens when I go afk for an extended period of time.

Xav, yes in the past it has been maxed out. Today it showed CPU usage @ 13%. Weird.

memory leak
03-20-2003 11:24
First, I would like to say that I think the game is beautiful to look at, a dream to play, and is/will be my future addiction! I have noticed what I think may be a memory link. At first I thought it was just lag although when I mentioned it to someone I was talking with, they were not experiencing any lag at all. Eventually I had to log off because the game became quite un-playable. The following day after about half an hour the game became progressivly slower until again becoming un-playable. I logged off and went in search of maybe a cache that could/should be emptied thinking that maybe it had filled with all the traveling to new areas. I cant find a cache so that was not it I guess. One reason I am thinking of a memory leak is that it does continue to affect my entire system until reboot. The game will take sometimes almost 3 minutes to close and then does not release mem back to the system. This is going to be an excellent game! Keep up the great work and thanks

Yeah, I think a lot of people around here think there's a memory leak. There probably is, really. Whenever LL programmers find one and patch it, another one probably pops up someplace else, but I'm sure all will be taken care of as SL continues to progress. Just gotta remember, this is still a beta. Assuming version 1.0 will be the retail release, we're not even halfway through, yet, so I'd expect things will only get better from here on out. Of course, you could always get a gig of RAM and be home-free, like me.

Ok the added memory seems to have "fixed" the out of memory error. I use quotes because its really more of a work around than a fix.
Here is a new interesting thing though.
When idle for long periods I now find that I'm stuck and cant move. I can IM people, I can use the camera views. I cannot move, fly, teleport or click on anything.
My fps was in the 30s, no lost packets but whoa! ZERO bandwidth.
I can flip out of SL and access the internet, read the forums, check email but flipping back & forth to SL still... zero bandwidth. What's happening here???

Mis, sounds like you lost connection to the server.
No, not -all- connection --- the chat/communication connection was still good, obviously =) I've had this happen to me a few times, and every time, if I look at my map, the sim I'm in has a red "glow" to it. Only way to regain that connection is to relog.

Cache and available memory?
03-25-2003 12:28
I originally saw this error...until I opened up the disk cache all the way (via the cache size dialog), and made certain I had plenty of free memory on the machine (disk and ram). After that I left the game running for two days (all weekend pretty much) with no issues. I also turned object detail, avatar composite, draw distance, and texture quality, all the way down before letting the app run overnight. When it was 7 p.m. EST the next day (so the app had been running for a long time), I shut down and logged back in to refresh the client, and noticed my hard disk spun hard for about a solid minute (clearing 128 meg of disk cache and freeing up the ram for the process I assume).
I'm sure you all considered this but I didn't see it in the post so figured I'd mention it, and up my post total ;p .
Soon, if I am diligent, I will have as many posts as #2 (I doubt I'll ever catch Nada).

Well whatever it is it's intermittant. Since I upped my memory to a gig I seemed to have gotten rid of this issue. However it happened again tonight.. I get a dialog box from the SL "Smart Heaps Library" indicating I need to free up resources because the memory is too low (or out, I forget).
Again, nothing else running. CPU @ 13%.
It's making me crazy!

I have 512MB RAM and that happens to me if I leave SL running idle for too long. I run nothing else when I run SL.
