Recently all SL viewers I try (LL's regular viewers, LL's RCs, Imprudence, Onrez) crash while logging in at the exact same spot. They are fine until the are "Initializing Multimedia" then they all crash. I've tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling viewers, the whole thing and it simply. won't. work.
Here are the specs:
Second Life 1.21.6 (99587) Oct 14 2008 17:42:25 (Second Life Release) Release Notes
CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2607 MHz) Memory: 3328 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600) Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc. Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series OpenGL Version: 2.1.8395 Release
libcurl Version: libcurl/7.16.4 OpenSSL/0.9.7c zlib/1.2.3 J2C Decoder Version: KDU LLMozLib Version: [LLMediaImplLLMozLib] - 2.01.21572 (Mozilla GRE version 1.8.1.13_0000000000)
Help please? I haven't been able to login for weeks and it's driving me up the wall.

Login to another location. When you start the viewer, go to Edit > Preferences > General and you can change your start location.

You might try uninstalling Quicktime and reinstalling the latest version.
You might also try uninstalling Silverlight if that's installed.

Already tried that and I don't have Silverlight installed. Thanks though.

What are your system specs?
Have you tried logging in while QT is uninstalled?

Hello ^_^ Did you install any codec packages? They may interfere with your installed quicktime version, cause most of them contain quicktime-alternative, which is quicktime without the extras.

Did SL ever work on this PC?
Your computer specs are more than adequate, something must have changed in your local environment. If you have automatic updates turned on for windows, antivirus, and firewall this can be hard to track down. Try to remember if you made ANY changes in that time frame. You might particularly look at the version of your graphics driver, and see if it automatically updated itself recently.
If not, I would -- very quickly -- turn off your antivirus and try it again. If that works, then it probably your antivirus is probably interfering with SL's cache - you can tell your antivirus to not check the cache, which in in SL's Application Data directory.
Also in that directory is a folder called "logs". You might be able to get more info about what is causing the problem by reading the log made during bootup.
Same thing with the firewall, turn it off and try SL. I doubt that will help, though - crashing is not usually a symptom of network issues.
If you have broadband, have you tried powering down your router for 15 minutes? I suppose you might have some sort of routing table poison that might cause this, but again, I doubt this is a network issue. .

Asriazh Frye: Hi :3 No, I haven't installed any codec packages. Although I do wonder if VLC comes with any extra baggage.
Nika Talaj: Yeah, It worked fine until one day it looked like I had lost connection to the server (but hadn't redmapped yet, basically I couldn't talk to anyone or move anywhere, I could just rotate) and when I went to relog, poof, it had stopped working.
I tried the antivirus thing (I used AVG) but it didn't seem to help. I'll try giving my router a rest then but I too, doubt, it's a network issue. After all it's doing everything else fine and if I have a text viewer like METAbolt logging in and running it promptly gets disconnected so it seems like the viewers are talking to the servers ok.
I get this on the logs:
2009-02-07T18:41:48Z INFO: LLDrawPoolWLSky::LLDrawPoolWLSky: loading WindLight cloud noise from C:\Program Files\SecondLife\app_settings\windlight\clouds2.tga 2009-02-07T18:41:48Z INFO: viewer_windows_exception_handler: Entering Windows Exception Handler... 2009-02-07T18:41:49Z INFO: LLAppViewer::handleViewerCrash: Handle viewer crash entry. 2009-02-07T18:41:49Z INFO: LLAppViewer::handleViewerCrash: Creating crash marker file C:\Documents and Settings\Turboweevel\Application Data\SecondLife\logs\SecondLife.error_marker 2009-02-07T18:41:49Z INFO: LLAppViewer::handleViewerCrash: Created crash marker file C:\Documents and Settings\Turboweevel\Application Data\SecondLife\logs\SecondLife.error_marker 2009-02-07T18:41:49Z INFO: LLAppViewer::handleViewerCrash: Handle viewer crash generating stats log. 2009-02-07T18:41:49Z INFO: LLAppViewer::writeDebugInfo: Opening debug file C:\Documents and Settings\Turboweevel\Application Data\SecondLife\logs\debug_info.log
I do wonder why this is happening.

I wonder if its a damaged cache and/or settings.xml, tho the settings .xml at your SL profile should get deleted when you uninstall and reinstall another version. It still might be worth a try to delete both ^_^

Suggestive log, crashing as it's trying to set up your graphics. Have you tried turning off all shaders before you log in? (on the login screen, choose Edit Preferences on the abbreviated menu at the top, and turn off everything you can on the graphics custom settings). If that works, possibly your driver is now incompatible with SL.
ATI cards can be very problematic for SL - have you searched the forums for messages in the last 3 months having RADEON or 4800 in the text? Maybe there's some advice from others as to driver revisions that work well for that card. .

-Asriazh I tried that, uninstalled the viewers and deleted their folders in application data but and then reinstalled LL's client but the problem persists and the log is the same. The entire log is here: http://pastebin.com/m1042887b

If you have onboard video of any sort that will run SL at all, you could try removing your video card and seeing if you can get SL to run on your onboard graphics.
This is just for informational purposes.
Same if you have any other video cards to try.

The only person I found with a problem similar to mine was running an nVidia card. I do think the log is suggestive too. I tried turning all the bells and whistles off but that didn't help. Still crashing. From: Ilyushin Tzedek I'm afraid I don't have any other cards :\ Off to RL, no time to look at the log. But I'm with Suezanne, if you have the time to fool with it, try it with your onboard graphics just as a debugging exercise. If it comes up, the gun will be pointing at your card, drivers, or some change you didn't mean to make in the graphics card configuration (happened to me once). You could try putting up a thread with a title like: Anyone using ATI RADEON HD 4870 successfully? and get respondents to give you their driver version and config settings for it. Good luck!

Nika, I love you and I want to have your babies. Your statement about changing graphics config made a little light in me head go DING and once I set the graphics card to always use application settins on everything SL worked like a charm. Now to find out the culprit.
Everyone, thank you so much for your help, you all rock <3

I should add that once I logged in once and then back out I was able to use SL normally again even though I reversed the changes I just made on the graphics card config. Something probably just got wedged.

Glad you got it straightened out.
That solution is one that we volunteer troubleshooters ought to remember, particularly since it's so easy to do.
I'm not remembering the exact problem it caused, but one setting that I've read causing others trouble along with myself is the Catalyst A.I.
