yeah like the title says I've not been able to log in for 4 days now, bar two brief occassions when I've been online for 5 mins only for SL to crash shortly thereafter. otherwise it just freezes during the log in stage at the "second life may appear to be frozen" bit, it either stays at that message perpetually until I quit or sometimes it gives me the "despite our best efforts something went wrong, check the /status page blah blah". not really sure what's going on, been using second life on this machine for nearly a year now and never had a problem, one day its working fine, i log off, go to sleep, wake up, go to work, come home, try to log on again and it refuses to work and hasn't properly done since friday. is it just me? any ideas?

From: Wim Dreadlow yeah like the title says I've not been able to log in for 4 days now, bar two brief occassions when I've been online for 5 mins only for SL to crash shortly thereafter. otherwise it just freezes during the log in stage at the "second life may appear to be frozen" bit, it either stays at that message perpetually until I quit or sometimes it gives me the "despite our best efforts something went wrong, check the /status page blah blah". not really sure what's going on, been using second life on this machine for nearly a year now and never had a problem, one day its working fine, i log off, go to sleep, wake up, go to work, come home, try to log on again and it refuses to work and hasn't properly done since friday. is it just me? any ideas? Well i'm fairly active and crash often enough, so here are my limited experience tips to increasing your chances of less crashes and logging on successfully. Upon a crash or freeze, control alt delete and bring up task manager, make sure no copy of second life is still running in the background, it sometimes is even after a crash. Disable Peerguardian or other firewall / ip blocking utilities, annoying I know but if it is such a utility see its documentation for how to configure SL to work with it. Clear your cache from preferences, you can do this on the login screen. Set your video memory one notch down in SL preferences. SL seems to max the video card, whatever the card, so even if there is a slight bit of degradation you will get occasional lock ups. Submit a support ticket now, as if its going to take a while to resolve this issue your better starting early. Disable all other background applications you don't need, if this fixes it, then one by one re-enable them. (Set your draw distance lower, haven't done it but I hear its helpful) Reinstall Second life, usually the catch all solution. Hope it helps.

I've also got a problem that causes the viewer to freeze while logging in. It only happens if I try to log in without clearing my cache first. If, once logged in, I don't allow my inventory to finish fetching, everything will be fine next time I try to log in. But if my inventory finishes fetching, I get these effects: 1. Opening the texture picker freezes the viewer 2. Opening the resident picker freezes the viewer 3. Opening a second inventory window freezes the viewer 4. Logging in without clearing cache freezes the viewer
MAYBE you've got the same thing I do? Try opening the viewer, using Preferences > Network > Clear Cache, and restarting the viewer before logging in...

Hi Wim! Welcome to the forums.
2 thoughts:
1. Your cache may be completely messed up. Rather than just rebuilding it, try completely deleting it (you will have to reset your preferences afterwards). In XP the folder is (delete the whole thing): C:\Documents and Settings\<your userid>\Application Data\SecondLife
In Vista the folder is: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife
2. Your ISP may have changed something on you. Try unplugging and powering down your broadband modem or router for 15 minutes, to let all cached address etc. entries time out. If that doesn't work, call your ISP and ask them to monitor your bandwidth while you startup SL. It could be that they put in place some Quality of Service box that throttles applications that look like bittorrent ... COmcast has been known to do this.
Good luck! .

last three months
01-29-2008 12:51
yea I've been running SL for three years plus and never have i ever had so many crashes as in the last three months.
The new release gives me that "try again" screen and check my firewall picture..ain't it cute? but usually what gets the "car started" for me is relogging with a more basic second life client or the windlight viewer..if only temporarily.
I have been concerned though...and usually i'm not..the freezes and "second life is not responding" are lasting longer...and a simple pan of camera..or zoom in or out is what seems to triggers my crashes.
I've only experienced an hour at the most though of interrupted service so im not panicing yet..but yea...i see ominous clouds on the horizon.

Unable to log since Friday as well
01-29-2008 14:50
Everything that Wim originaly said is the exact issue I am having! Cant log in since Friday - 6 days now. When I do manage to get in after deleting the cache manually, clearing temp files, even kicking my router and reinstalling! I might be lucky and get on for 5 mins - then it runs slowwwwwww! I did manage for a few hours..i got excited...but no, alas I was doomed to the sign on screen telling me something unexpected had gone wrong - (yeah i know that - dont rub it in!)
Sent in ticker and waitng for the magic wand - meanwhile..anyone who has any futher ideas??
BTW, WImm you don thappen to beon AOL in the UK?

connectivity issue with AOL (UK) and SL possible fix
01-29-2008 17:31
This MAY be a POSSIBLE fix for people unalbe to log into SL if they are currently using AOL in the UK..
AOL are currently upgrading their network, this can cause connetivity issues when using online secure gaming sites.
the AOL network runs at an MTU of 1450 - so you may need to change this in your WAN settings in your router.
As I said, ive only just changed mine and hopefully this will solve the problem!!!!
