This has been happening frequently and is getting very tedious. here's a picture of the error. I guess it has to do with my DSL firewall and the new server LL has.

edit: spellcheck

My partner crashes and recieves this message several times a day, and i have never recieved it even once. We are both on similar pc's and using the same ADSL connection. Me being online at the same time (or not) makes no difference to this happening so I don't think this message is neccesarily caused ONLY by a network problem.

I don't think he's put in a bug report tho (i don't know how he stands it). The only suggestion I would give you is to firstly completely uninstall and reinstall SL, then put in a bug report if it still happens.

I'd be interested to know if that fixes it.

I've reinstalled 2 times so far and still getting it. My DSL must not be liking some connection...

I am getting the same error, did you manage a fix? Please post if you have. Noone at SL will acknowledge this. I was told to "defrag" my harddrive...sheesh :-/

Okay, guys, what kind of network cards do you have? Is anyone on wireless?

Rysidian, how does your computer's networking hardware differ from your partner's? Is your partner using a filesharing system like Gnutella or Bittorrent?

Stroker, it's highly possible that the error messages SL spits out aren't actually correct. Did a defrag actually help your system?

If running WinXP, I highly recommend using this utility. Even if you're not having any problems with your computer, it's a good idea to install it anyway. It'll keep your pagefile nice and contiguous.

Same error..different day

Catherine thanks for your concern. I spoke with Colin today and he suggested dumping the temp file, which I did, and increased it to 20 gig. Apparently it had no effect. I am running a Realtek RTL8139 n.i.c. Although I cant say why this would just "magically" start happening. Also, does not seem to effect other games. Just SL. I am getting very discouraged.
I run Win2k on dsl btw.

Heres what I have tried...defrag (using Catherines suggested utility, TY ) reinstalled, cleared/enlarged the windows temp file, checked my dsl connection (averages 600kbps) removed any bandwidth competing programs (iMesh, Bit Torrent, YIM)

Maybe this will help you. I dunno. This seems to have started Friday. But there were no updates. Im at a loss, and I know of LOTS of other people having the same issues. Whats the point of having such a great place to play if you cant stay connected to it?

Catherine,

The only major difference between our systems is that he is using a network card (not sure of brand but will check, not wireless) and I am using the onboard ethernet. We have the same motherboard, cpu, & memory, tho he has a newer video card Nvidia Fx series i have a Mx440. We are both running Win2k Pro. Our pc's are connected to a network switch which connects to our ADSL modem.

Also it might be worth noting that we are in Australia and out net connection is 512kbps and we suffer alot of frequent but not constant packetloss tho turning our bandwidth ingame to 200kbps each helps immensly with this.

I should get him to try using the onboard network and see if that fixes the problem.

And no neither of us are using any other programs that use the network or internet while this occurs.

Thanks for your suggestions.

First, he needs to submit bug reports.

Second, try it with the onboard network adapter. If you have an onboard port, there's ususally very little reason to bother using an expansion slot.

Assuming both your drivers are the same and there aren't any physical problems with his hardware, you might consider plugging his computer directly into the modem, and seeing if that helps. It's unlikely that it would, given that you can connect fine, but it could help track down the problem.

I assume that your switch is also a router?

Thanks Catherine, I don't know why he insists on using his PCI network card, but i didn't even think of drivers (shame on me). I know i am up to date on drivers, maybe i should comandeer his pc and update his too, hehe.

The modem includes a router tho it is running in bridged mode so we are connecting using pppoe creating seperate connections from our pc's (i'm not sure if it's the same or similar in the US) through the modem/router.

As for plugging his pc directly into the modem!! then how would i play? :( hehe j/k. Anyway TY!

Yes, upgrade his drivers! 95% of all problems with SL can be explained by bad drivers, thermal/power failure or bad networking configuration.

My reasoning for asking about plugging it directly into the modem was to see if it'd work at all that way. If it does, figure out why the modem is doing odd things.

I'm kind of skeptical about your network, to be honest. Can you give me the make and model numbers of both your hub and your modem/router? I don't mean to doubt your knowledge, but that sounds suspiciously similar to a setup that won't work properly AT ALL.

Also, try this page I made. It's pretty basic stuff, but who knows, there might be something you missed.

Especially since we can play SL fine mostly, except for minor packetloss and this problem.

I certainly wouldn't rule out the chance of our network setup being bad at all. We both work in the IT field but aren't network savvy. I had to do ALOT of reading when we first got ADSL to get our network up and running (as our ISP does not provide support if you are connecting ADSL to more than 1 pc).

We have been thinking of upgrading to a 1500kpbs connection as recent price drops in Aus have just occured, which may help this or fix it completely.

Oh, and sorry for hijacking your thread Nick :)
